No frills flying...tips for happy travels 2

by jayhawk2000

November to February is the ideal time to book that cheap fare, when even full-frills carriers like AerLingus and BA pare back their fares.Another tip is to consider the usual traffic to your choice of destination and plan against demand. For instance, fly midweek to holiday resorts and hen party hotspots like Tenerife, Barcelona and Amsterdam. On the other hand, fly on the weekend to a business destination like Brussels or Milan. In May 2004 the EU adopted another ten nations into her brood and sure enough there has been a massive network expansion as Eastern Europe opens up. Usually new routes begin with special introductory fares.

LONDON UNDERGROUND

by elraad

THE LONDON UNDERGROUND IS A TRANSIT SYSTEM THAT SERVES MUCH OF GREATER LONDON AND SOME NEIGHBOURING AREAS. IT IS THE WORLD'S OLDEST UNDERGROUND SYSTEM, AND IS ONE OF THE LARGEST TERMS OF ROUTE LENGTH.POPULAR LOCAL NAMES INCLUDE THE UNDERGROUND AND, MORE COLLOQUIALLY, THE TUBE, IN REFERENCE TO THE CYLINDRICAL SHAPE OF THE SYSTEM'S DEEP-BORE TUNNELSFOR THE VISITOR TO LONDON, THE UNDERGROUND WILL PROBABLY BE THE TRANSPORT OF CHOICE. THERE IS INVARIABLY AN UNDERGROUND STATION NEARBY WHERE YOU WANT TO GET, AND FINDING YOURSELF AROUND THE SYSTEM REALLY IS VERY EASY.ADULT: 4 POUNDSCHILD: 2 POUNDS

luton - stansted transfer

by say-no-more

lot of low-cost airlines these days fly to london, and from london to almost anywhere. but be careful when you book the tickets, because there are a couple of airports named london-something, which are actually quite far away from london and from each other. be sure that you have enough time between flights to get from one airport to another - take into account waiting for the luggage, timetables of the buses, distance between the airports, traffic jams, check-in time...for example, from london luton to london stansted it takes between 1.15 and 2 hours by bus! the good thing is that the buses go very frequently. plus you get to see some small and nice english towns in between :))also, you can book tickets online, which is great because it reduces the time. you can do it here: http://www.london-luton.co.uk/en/nationalexpress/one more tip, about the money. be sure to have english pounds...

Carry on luggage in London

by superdad95973

Just a note that would have helped me had I known ahead of time. London's Heathrow airport only allows one carryon bag of ANY kind per person. I'm not sure if this is true of all London airports or maybe England in general but they have been the only one that have this requirement......and they are sticklers about it.

No frills flying...some airlines & websites

by jayhawk2000

NB: Routes change frequently. Destinations may not be flown to year round.www.bmibaby.comA fast-growing spin-off of British Midland with hubs in Manchester, Cardiff, Teeside and East Midlands Airport near Nottingham. They have an excellent range of destinations but also seem a bit pricey for me. www.easyjet.comYour best bet if you don't live in London as they have the most British gateways, including Aberdeen, Gatwick, Edinburgh Glasgow, Newcastle, East Midlands, Liverpool, Bristol, Belfast, Luton (their hub), Stansted and Inverness. They fly to a good mix of destinations, from Copenhagen to Athens to Ibiza.www.ryanair.comThis carrier is Irish, with hubs in Dublin and Shannon, although few of these flights reach the Continent (most Irish flights are to UK airports). They have many, many flights out of 'London' Stansted plus a choice selection from Liverpool (connected to Manchester by...

Now for some bad news about that flight to Brzyzysyg or wherever you've seen advertised for 17p...you have to accept that you won't be able to book the advertised rock-bottom fare! Why not?--This fare is usually only for a single...great if you're bumming around Europe, but most of us want to come back to old Blighty. --This fare is probably for a mid-week flight in late January or some other quiet period.--This fare includes any discount for booking on-line (something to bear in mind if you decide to ring their helplines to book by phone). --This fare usually excludes taxes levied by the state and the airports. Some airlines also charge extra if you book by credit card and not a Switch card. --And finally, if you don't live within walking distance of 'London' Stansted, chances are you'll spend more money getting to the airport than flying out of it!Still, the fares that are on offer can...

No frills flying...getting around for less

by jayhawk2000

Many British airlines offer jaw-droppingly low fares to a tremendous number of European destinations.I've seen many posts in the VT forum asking 'I've heard of this airline offering this low price for a flight...is it for real? Is it safe? How do they do it?'The no-frills airlines are cheap because:1. They fly mainly between out of the way British airports to smaller European cities. Be careful: a flight they claim is to Stockholm or Paris may actually be to a provincial airport 50 miles away. Some of these airports are inconvenient, but many are fascinating destinations you might otherwise overlook. These smaller airports are often quicker to navigate and have fewer flights clogging the luggage carousels.2. They don't offer complimentary in-flight meals but sell pricey drinks and pre-packaged snacks.3. Most of them don't issue tickets but instead just give you a booking reference. Did...

No frills flying

by jayhawk2000

Something to think about...There are fears that air travel could become a new way of commuting, with travel by plane becoming almost as common as travel by car. This means the acceleration of air pollution. A flight from London to Miami and back puts as much pollution in the air as an entire year of driving a car in the UK! What's worse is that these emissions go straight into the atmosphere at high altitudes, making it harder for trees to absorb the pollution. Here are some things you can do:Don't fly domestically within the UK. When you factor in the time it takes to get to the airport, check in, fly and travel from the airport to your destination it is probably as quick to take the train.Limit your flights. Instead of three separate weekends to Venice, Florence and Rome why not take a week to see all three? That's one flight there and another back, instead of six separate...

Britrail England Consecutive Pass

by sswagner

Great Britain does not participate in the Eurail Pass network. Rather, it has its own sets of passes. Train travel here is not cheap, so careful planning would be in order. I purchased a discounted pass due to the winter off season for $131.00. The pass allowed me four days of unlimited train travel within England itself. To show how much I saved over buying each ticket separately, I will illustrate:(1) Round trip on the Gatwick Express--25 pounds(2) London to Bath--44 pounds(3) Bath to Salisbury--11.20 pounds(4) Salisbury to London--25.20 pounds(5) London to Stratford-upon-Avon--35.30 pounds(6) Stratford-upon-Avon to Warwick--3.40 pounds(7) Warwick-London--32.60 poundsThis totals to 186.30 pounds. At the exchange rate to dollars at the time, it would have cost me approximately $365! This means I saved $234. Naturally, my recommendation is to get this pass if you going to be in country...
