Taxis, cabs and mini-cabs.

by leics

Using a taxi is always going to be the most expensive form of public transport ...... you are paying for the convenience of going 'door-to-door') ....... but there are times when they come in useful. Most people know about the famous black cabs of London, but what about the rest of the England? There are black cabs in some other large towns, but you'll mainly find taxis which are ordinary saloon cars, licensed by the local authority (there will be a license plate near the number plate). You can't hail these taxis on the street, though you will often find a 'rank' (a place where they wait for custom) near the local station. Otherwise, you will have to phone them up. Ask locally for advice. The travel rates are set by the local authority too. There will be a meter on the dashboard.....check that it is switched on before you move off. Also check that you have enough money to pay the driver...

Catching Tube into London

by bdines

Because of the cost of staying in London, my family and I got a great tip from a friend, who suggested we stay outside the city. And each day we wanted to visit London, we'd drive to the end of one of the tube lines, park ourcar cheaply, then take the train in. We used the Cockfosters station, but other's would also work. Given the cost of things in England and the poor exchange rate from dollar to pound, this is a create way to save money.

How to get around London

by hepchick

The London Tube is a great way of transportation. You get everywhere an easy way. And don't forget to buy a travelpass instead of paying every time. By the way these passes are the cheapest when you buy them in your own country.Wut when you want to see more of the town though, go by bus. Although it's more difficult to find your way around, it's worth it. Also you have to realise that the centre of London is not as big as it might seem. You can walk almost everywhere and get to see the most of this city. All on a shoestring. And for the Dutch, cycling is a dangerous business. Sometimes you cycle on roads where the speed might be up to 80 km's an hour. But it does give you some kicks.

Train travel - occasionally cheap, sometimes quick

by aaaarrgh

Shhhhh, this is really a 'Great Britain' tip!In the 1990's British Rail was a victim of the government's attempt to (a) introduce the 'free market' (b) break up the powerful trade unions. So these days there are many different private companies running the trains, while others maintain the tracks. Confusion reigns, sometimes on the profitable routes you can find several trains leaving to the same destination within minutes of one another. And there are many, many different ticket prices - if you buy in advance you can get some cheap deals. Bus travel is generally much cheaper but a lot slower! Some of the direct, mainland train routes (London to the Southwest, for example) are very good. But if you want to travel across country, or on a Sunday, you can experience delays. It is possible to plan your route and buy tickets over the internet in advance. Try www.thetrainline.com or...

Discount airfare across the pond

by avanutria

This morning I booked tickets to Heathrow through www.1800flyeurope.com . They're based out of Maine, USA, and have positive reviews in msnbc.com and frommers.com . They're one of the places that tell you the name of your airline *after* you pay, but Frommers vouched for the airlines, and sure enough, I'm on American Airlines! A short-term notice trip from Seattle to London for under $500 round trip. Not bad at all. I'll update next month with my impressions of the flight.Update - no problems with the flight at all, I would definitely recommend flying through 1800flyeurope.com.(Do you like this tip? Please rate it, thanks!)

American Hazzards of Driving in England

by no1birdlady

In order to save money, we picked up our rental car in London which was a mistake. Being from America, we were NOT used to driving on the other side of the road or having the steering wheel on the other side of the car. The traffic in London is an awful place to learn how to drive differently. It's a wonder we didn't have a wreck. My friend did an excellent job of driving the car and we finally did find our way out of London, but it was not without a lot of prayer. We knew we were lost when we passed Buckingham Palace for the 3rd time. And then even when we finally figured out where we should have turned, we were in the totally wrong lane and of course no one would let us over. It was a hair-raising experience. In retrospect, we would have been better off to take the train to a town outside of London and rent the car there. Another thing we learned about driving concerned the...

The cheat's guide to UK Rail travel

by cheat

Travelling 'sans ticket' on UK trains, you have 2 things to worry about:1) Ticket Inspectors2) Ticket barriers at stations.1) Dealing with ticket inspectors.a) Avoid ticket inspectors: This involves taking the slowest train possible, changing at all major stations, or getting off if an inspector is noticed at a distance. When heading into London, make it to the edge of Greater London and you're usually safe - there's always somewhere to change onto the very slowest trains. Follow my London Termini guide for next steps...b) Ignore ticket inspectors: two ways of going about this, either pretend to be asleep (choose a window seat for this) - often they won't wake you. I have travelled from one end of the country to the other and back solely depending on this method. Alternatively, you can ignore their presence totally - don't be nervous, just look out of the window or fixedly at the back of...

Rail Pass

by mrandmrsdevlin

Before we left we had debated about getting a rail pass, and it ended up being the best thing that we could have possibly done. It allowed us to travel everywhere we wanted to at the drop of a hat. We were able to just get on any train at any time and end up somewhere, and if we didn't like it there we would get on again and go somewhere else. It was fantastic!Britrail offers several combinations of plans based on your itinerary and budget, it's worth a look! We got an 8 day consecutive pass, which means 8 days from the day that it was validated. The "flexi-pass" seemed like it would be a good choice for longer trips as it gives you a certain number of days, but they can be spread sporatically throughout a given amount of time.

Trains - General

by SueWarwick

When buying train tickets, it pays to look around for the best deal.Try www.thetrainline.com to get your tickets online. Its best to try to book your tickets early and do not restrict yourself to only traveling at a particular time.See if you can break the jouney up. It would have cost me £55 to get a return ticket from Wirral to London but only £30 to get two single tickets (not sure how that worked out!)However, sometimes its cheaper to get a return ticket even if you are only going one way.I saved a few pounds going to Manchester airport by getting one ticket from Wirral to Manchester and another from Manchester to the airport (both tickets bought from the station in Wirral)
