Coming to Britain ? From the Airport (Gatwick)

by sourbugger

From Gatwick airport most people take the Gatwick express (£12). It's fine, clean and regular (sounds like an advert for All-bran) and a reasonable cost. It takes 30 mins to get to london Victoria, and leaves every 15 mins in the day. However, depending upon the location of your hotel it might be useful to use the Thameslink train service up through the centre of london to King's Cross and beyond. It's a little bit slower but works out a few quid cheaper.Alternatively you could head the other way and visit the south coast - cities like Brighton or Bournemouth.

The route of the Flying Scotsman

by sourbugger

There are regular services from London to the Capital of the North East - Newcastle, taking less than 3 hours. The East Coast main Line (ECML) is the only route in the UK that can legitimately be called 'High speed'. Nowadays many of the trains use ex-eurostar stock from the Channel tunnel link (London-Paris)Although not the most densely populated side of the UK it has long had the better transport links. The world speed record for steam (126mph) was made on these tracks, just north of Peterborough - and it still stands today. The route passes through a number of fine cities, usually most noted for their cathedrals, such as Peterborough, York and Durham. A ticket that would allow you to stop off in these places would thus be a great idea.Return fares, booked in advance can be had from as little as 20 pounds, but normal fares are quite a bit higher.

More -- Driving in England

by JellyTrollMorton

When first driving, my right hand got sore bumping the crank on the window because my reflex was to reach for the shift there (did I mention that we also rented a manual transmission car?) Also, the locations of rear view mirrors are hard to get used to. The location of the pedals are the same as in the US.When I first sat in the passenger seat, I found myself reaching for an invisible steering wheel, and I worked a groove into the floor trying to step on a non-exisitent brake. Also, oncoming traffic would look scary and for the first half-hour, I was yelling things like "That car doesn't have a driver!" and "That guy is letting his Labrador Retriever drive!" until I realized that I was looking at the wrong seat.My wife did most of the driving and I navigated. If you know us, you realize how obvious this decision is. My wife sometimes gets lost in the hallway at home, and the only reason...

You haven't lived until you've driven in England

by JellyTrollMorton

My wife and I are from the United States, and we have rented cars and have driven around England twice. If you are up to it, I would recommend touring the countryside in a hired (British for rented) automobile.Prior to our first trip to England, our only experience with a vehicle with the steering wheel on the right side was on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disneyland. To be honest, our first couple of hours driving there resembled the ride to a startling degree. However, once we got the hang of things, we settled down into a nice comforting state of uneasiness.Driving on the left side of the road was not as big an issue as we originally thought. We got used to it, even though the passenger's job was to always to make sure that the driver ended up in the correct lane after every turn. The passenger never slept when we drove. To be honest, it was impossible for the passenger to sleep. The hard...

Budget coach travel...? No thanks !

by sourbugger

From SB's London page :Victoria Coach st. is not as bad as it used to be...but if there are a few delays about, then it can become a very crowded and deeply downright unpleasant place to be.On the other hand if you want cheap travel to other parts of the country then you may well have to use it. Even this "Thrill" may be passed up soon by the new operators such as "Easybus" who intend to pick up from lay-bys to cut costs. You may enjoy this poem that I found on a e-publishing site (Mudlark) which seems to sum the place up :Exhaust fumes, urine, immemorial cigarettes –A reek even freezing cold cannot dispel;Passengers in groups, in queues, in seatsAs the Rapide from unsunny CarlisleFlexes brakes, with faces in a sullen rowThe coach for Coventry prepares to go...By the railings a mouth works up-and-downAt the universe and no one, the manAttached identikit twentyish, lean. The radiation he...

How to avoid the congestion charge..in london

by sourbugger

From Sourbugger's London page :Apart from the rather obvious comment that you could use public transport or walk, there are a number of ways that you can legitimately avoid Uncle Mayor Ken's little wheeze. If you drive a bus (more than 9 seats), are disabled (and registered as such) or drive an electric car then you should escape without a problem. Remember the charge only operates on weekdays. If you are driving a foreign car to London, then beware, as agreements have been signed with a collection agency to trace cars in about 20-odd countries. If you are on German or Danish plates, then you should escape because of Data protection legislation working in your favour. The French too (typical) should escape, due to the high costs of collection in France. Serial offenders may have a problem however.Taxis are exempt and most minicabs are. On no account allow a minicab driver to 'con' you on...

Original Bus Tour

by CindyInItaly

If you are going to be in London for a short period of time, taking a bus tour is a great idea. You could buy a tube pass and see all of the city that way, but it's so much easier with a bus tour so you can hop on and hop off as you want to stop and see something. The pass is good for 24 hours. They must be purchased at a major starting point on the tour. Check out the website for tons of information and a virtual tour.

Rent a car !

by tifosi

Driving a car on the motorways may be a bit boring, but once you get on the smaller A/B roads its a lot of fun !Hire a small car (like a Corsa or a Clio) which is reasonable (around £50 for a week-end) and basically you have huge amount of flexibility.. You can stop where you want, drive when you want and have fun if you like driving.National Express (the bus service) isnt that bad but renting a car is the best way to see the countryside.Trains/Buses have to be booked very early to get cheap tickets or else trains are good too

Pullman dining on the Great Western

by deptlads

First Great Western offer a full service Pullman dining service on certain week-day trains out of, and into, Paddington. The service is open to all ticket-holders, but preference is given to First Class passengers when demand is high.We tried the Pullman service on the 19:33 Paddington to Penzance train on Friday 18 June 2004. The staff were instantly helpful and very friendly. If you ever feel guilty about ordering a vodka before dinner - don't worry, the staff here clearly understand what you need on a Friday evening after a hard week at work! The food is pretty good too. Proper, galley cooked food at that (no microwave). But the real joy was the friendly and relaxed attitude of the staff - who would have thought it on a UK railway! Well done to the First Great Western crew on the 19:33! We paid £35 each for three courses, including aperetifs (vodka & orange), a half bottle of wine...

Tube maps

by bpwillet

The London meto/subway or tubes as they call them here are a very easy way to get around the maze that is London. Tickets can be bought from ticket machines or from ticket offices at each tube stop. The prices will vary depending on the amount of travel you want to do, regions you want to go to, and how long you want the ticket to last. Most guide books will provide a tube map and so will every souvenir store. You can also by them at the stations. If you are gifted with aphotographic memory then you can just read the map and follow along the line that will take you to your destination. If all else fails just look somewhere in the metro car and you will see another map. Keep in mind some of the destinations that are listed on signs refer to the very last destination on the line, that is to help you figure out which direction you want to go in. Some lines stop running at various times...
