by Grootpiet It's great when it takes you a maximum of 20 minutes to get from your house to the airport... Newcastle is well connected with European cities through scheduled flights, and also has a number of tour operators with flights to the islands, Cyprus, Turkey and Mexico. As a bonus, it's well-connected with the Tyne & Wear Metro system. Leave a Comment

Getting There By Rail The nearest railway station is Newcastle Central, which has excellent connections to Scotland and the Midlands. From Newcastle Central in the City Centre the Metro then takes you directly to the airport in 23 minutes. The Metro also links Gateshead, South Tyneside, the coast and North Tyneside to the airport. Getting There By Bus Numbers 76, 76A, 77, 77A, 78, 78E, and 79 bus run to and from Newcastle City Centre (Eldon Square Bus Concourse) to the Airport entrance approximately every 20 minutes during the day and less frequently during the evening Monday - Saturday and all day Sunday. Call 08706 082 608 for more details. National Express runs coaches to and from Newcastle from the rest of the UK. Leave a Comment Theme: AirplanePhone: Enquiry Desk Tel: 0870 1221488

Newcastle-Upon-Tyne - United Kingdom by solopes Needing to travel by train from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Stansted airport, in London, the train, according to my needs, left at noon and arrived at the end of the day. The problem was that the only fare I found in the internet was 60€ per person. It was damn expensive, and in despair, I searched the low cost air companies. Do you believe that Easyjet took us all (5, yes five people) in less than an hour, and exactly for the same amount of 60 €? And how can Easyjet keep flying for so long with this price policy? The easiest way for a visitor (or anyone else) to get around Newcastle and the Tyneside area is to take the Metro. The system is easy to use, clean, reliable and generally efficient. There are just two lines – the green one runs between the Airport to the north west of the city and South Hylton on Wearside, while the yellow runs in a “loop with a tail” to connect the coast with the city centre. You need to buy your ticket in advance from the machines in the station. These don’t take bank notes or credit cards so you’ll need to make sure you have enough change for your journey. The stations are arranged in three zones and you pay according to how many zones you’ll be travelling through. As a guide, the cost in December 2006 was £2.50 for a 2-zone day return. The main stations in the city centre are Haymarket – for the Civic Centre, some good pubs (including our favourite, the Crows Nest) and the top end of Northumberland Street (start of the shopping district) Monument – for the shops of Eldon Square and many others, the Theatre Royal and shuttle buses to the Quayside and Metro centre Central Station – as the name suggests, for the central station and mainline connections, also a fairly easy walk to the Quayside St James – for the football stadium and also Chinatown For a bit of extra fun, especially if travelling with small children, try to get the seat at the front of the train – you’ll get a great view ahead down the tracks and the kids can pretend to drive the train! The only downsides to the Metro that I can see is that it doesn’t run on Bank Holidays and also that it stops running rather early at night – the last train from the city centre is before midnight even on a Saturday, and this is in the so-called “party capital” of Europe!

Pride of the Tyne by sandysmith From Soth Shields Ferry Landing, departing at 1pm on Sundays a 3 hou river trip can be made on the Tyne. The accompanying guide provides an in-depth commentary into the life of the river's past and new developments such as those we saw at the quayside. We watched this river boat, the South Shields ferry "The Pride of the Tyne", as we stood on the Millenium Bridge where its trip ended and it turned round to go back.

by Fen The Tyne and Wear Metro, is a quick, regular, and reliable method of light rail transport around both north and south Tyneside, with a spur running to Newcastle International Airport. The system runs underground through central Newcastle and Gateshead, and above ground everywhere else. It connects with main line rail services at Central Station, and with local bus services and taxi ranks at several points. Many Metro stations have car parks nearby. Leave a Comment

We travelled to Newcastle by train from London. As we had booked well in advance we got a great deal on tickets - it cost 25 pounds in all for the journey up and back. Interestingly, you can only get this price if you book two single tickets for each part of the journey - there is no return ticket for 25 pounds. Newcastle train is on the fast London-Edinburgh line and the journey took just over 3 hours. We arrived exactly on time in both directions. As you get close to Newcastle there are a few sights worth looking out for. First, you get a fine view of Durham city and cathedral from Durham station. Then, about 5 minutes outside of Durham you can see the Angel of the North. Finally, as you cross the Tyne into Newcastle there is a nice view of Newcastle, Gateshead and the bridges across the river. Leave a Comment
