Tanks!

by ElaineCatherine

This little warning is something that really came as a surprise to me. When you approach Stonehenge by road, there are tanks all ove the place. And you will also hear the loud booming of practice fire. It seems there is a military base of some sort nearby. Just an FYI.

Look out for killer donkeys at the seaside -

by sourbugger

From SB's Cleethorpes page :You just have to read this abridged account from Hansard (proceedings of the House of Commons)Mr. M.B: I have the honour and privilege to represent the seaside resort of Cleethorpes. For most hon. Members, the word "Cleethorpes" conjures up visions of seaside, donkey rides and the promenade. One of the greatest pleasures for young people of visiting Cleethorpes is the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of normal seaside pleasures. Donkey rides have been a traditional seaside pleasure at Cleethorpes and at other seaside resorts in the north, such as Skegness and Blackpool for a long time. Mr. H G : A donkey is not referred to as an equine, although it is within the equine family. Most often, donkeys are ridden on beaches, so there would be no danger in children riding them. I caution that donkeys are incredibly dangerous to ride and I have seen them unseat the...

Not exactly Las Vegas...

by sourbugger

From Sourbugger's Southend - on -sea page :(although it applies to several other downmarket resorts like Skegness and Blackpool)Southend is probably best known for the mile or so of amusement arcades stretched out along the seafront. The mass of neon lights is somewhat reminiscent of the Strip in Las Vegas, and they have similar names like "New York" or "Monte Carlo". These places are however limited to arcade games, bingo, slot machines (one-armed bandits) and 'push penny' type games. In addition you will find several novelty games, pool tables, 'grabber' cranes and air hockey etc.Things may well change when the current gambling laws get an overhaul in the near future.Southend also has other added attraction down here compared to Las Vegas - like a beach (well sort of), mountains of discarded fish and chip papers, hoardes of feckless youths high on cheap drink and petrolheaded idiots...

Watch out for small work agencies

by Bushman23

If you are planning on doing Agency work in the UK, dont go for the small agency offering big money! You may end up in a place like this... Called Red Roof, 10 of us stayed there, middle of winter, enough hot water for one (Yes, one) person to bath a night. We eventually started walking about 3 miles into Dereham to use the town pool showers. We left after a week...

Driving on the Left Side can be a little Tricky!

by saraheg77

Driving on the left side of the road wasn't too difficult to get used to... but on those narrow streets with limited vision, be careful! I had a close call with a 'recovery lorry' (we call those tow trucks). Luckily, the man driving it was very nice and checked out my car and told me it would be safe to drive it. Also, be sure you do buy the rental car insurance!! I did have to pay a bit of money, but not nearly what I might have if I hadn't gotten the insurace on the rental car! Good luck!

Mobile catering vans.

by leics

You may see mobile vans selling food and drinks at tourist spots or in lay-bys (places to stop on main roads). Be wary of these ..... the ones at tourist spots may rip you off and their hygiene is not always brilliant. Buy food and drink from shops to take with you, or look for pubs and cafes nearby.

Hostel warnings for London

by ThoraSB

Be very careful when looking for a hostel in London. We made the mistake of not making a reservation on our first stop there, and ended up wandering around late at night, trying to find a place to stay. A man approached us, and could obviously tell we were tourists. He told us that he had a place to stay that was several pounds cheaper than all the hostels in the city. He saw that we had a card of a hostel that we were planning on going to next. He whipped out his cell and "called" them. He told us that they said they only had one bed left. This man then proceeded to insist that we come to his hotel, because he had only two beds left, and would give them to us. My friend and I were getting a little disturbed by this man, and knew something was quite fishy. We ended up taking his card and getting the hell out of there. We figured he was a pimp or something, wanting to take advantage of...

Heathrow II.

by Rosie-o

Taryn and I must have really loved Heathrow. We ended up sleeping there on New Year's Day night because we could not get back home and I had to get a plane to Australia on the 2nd. Naively assuming that the UK's biggest airport might do the 24/7 thing we bunkered down, kidding ourselves that we would be able to drink coffee all night at one of the cafes. Of course we were wrong to presume that anything other than policemen with semi automatic guns and pickpockets hung out in Heathrow during the wee hours. Sleeping on lino is not comfortable, especially after being up all night dancing on New Year's Eve. We entertained ourselves by a) chatting b) singing and c) talking to some of the cops, who recommended that one of us always be awake in case someone stole our things. An interesting and strengthening experience.

Heathrow is a bummer ...

by Rosie-o

Hmmm Taryn and I had the *delight* of going to Heathrow three times in as many days! It was awesome to see our friends off - but a little more organisation on our part would have made the whole Heathrow thing a little easier.Firstly we missed the last bus to Wycombe two days running! For some stupid reason buses only run until 7pm. Therefore we had to fork out a lot of cash to get a cab from SLOUGH bus depot (not a nice place!).If you are not staying in the middle London (the tube runs until late in the evening) I recommend checking local bus timetables. To make a prolonged stay at Heathrow more bearable check out the Starbucks opposite the international terminal. Everywhere else is very expensize.

Gear up for LONDON

by jayhawk2000

Prepare yourself for LONDON. No doubt it's historic and has an impressive collection of museums and other treasures, but it's an expensive, dirty, ugly, soul-crushing place. Which is why Kew Gardens is one of my fave places to visit there.
