Henley in Arden Things to Do

  • High Street

But the real attraction of Henley is simply wandering along the High Street, nipping down little alleyways. With 150 listed buildings (not all open to the public), there's plenty to see. And with so many historic pubs - The Nag's Head, The Blue Bell, The Three Tuns, The White Swan, The Black Swan - there's plenty of opportunities to soak up the...

  • The Market Cross

In the 'centre' of the town, where there's the closest Henley has to a village square, is the surviving 15th century market cross - one of the few left in Warwickshire. It's somewhat worn but it has survived the ravages of history, the top having being lost in the late 18th century.

  • St John's

Henley's Parish church is St John's, which sits proudly on the main street, it's tower towering (!) over the neighbouring buildings. The original church was built here in 1367, although what we see today, at least on the outside, dates from the 15th century and the Perpendicular style (the first stage is dated from 1448, but a large part of the...

  • Heritage Centre

More about the Heritage Centre. The building itself is the oldest recorded building in Henley. Originally the Joseph Hardy House. Parts of which go back to 1345. You can take a walk around the rooms both on the ground and first floor. Lots of old beams and the floor was obviously ancient! Definetely not level and it creaked loudly. I found myself...

  • Just poke around!

If you wander around you will be delighted by little discoveries. This town really has charm and history. Like when I followed a little laneway to find a small graveyard tucked behind some houses.

  • Check out the old pubs.

Have a good look at all the old pubs. Some have such character and tell a story of their own. This one had the classic name of "The Nags Head."

  • Discover the architecture

While walking around I found many interesting old forms of architecture. There were these old carriage ways along the streets. Obviously for the horse drawn vehicles which would have used them.

  • Heritage Centre

I visited the Heritage Centre and it stands out as one of my most memorable moments. Firstly because of the charm of the people who ran the place. Secondly because of the interesting rooms and architecture found inside. One elderly man had me spellbound as he gave me an historical talk of Henley. Obviously he loved his job and I enjoyed listening to...

  • A " Sweet " discovery

This little icecream parlour was delightful. I didn't actually buy an icecream [ couldn't fit it in after lunch! ] but the place was very appealing. It has been serving icecream since the 1930'sThey also did light meals, tea/coffee and homemade cakes etc.

  • A fine dining experience

I didn't eat here but the place looked so lovely I had to take a pic. I had a quick look at the menu board and the prices were a bit higher than average. I got the impression it was a finer place to dine. I'm sure the food was good as it seemed popular.

  • Black Swan...lots of character!

Not only did the pub have good food but loads of character as well. Typical village style pub, nice interior and a great experience. The people were friendly, the service good and prices were pleasing. There were also tables out front for fine weather dining.

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Henley is not far from Stratford upon Avon and the local bus will get you there in no time.
The bus stop is opposite the Bluebell. Another beautiful pub in High Street.

Another beautiful pub. Bus stops accross the road.
