A masterpiece of vaulting, strong enough to support a Medieval chapel overhead. The first mention of a chapel is in 1123, so the gate is likely to be at least as old. Originally part of the town walls, gates were always closed at night to ensure security within. Warwick had three, of which only the East and West gates remain. The Dean's Chapel by leics A side-chapel within the Collegiate Church of St Mary, this is a tiny but perfectly-formed Medieval chapel barely large enough for 6 people. It is a most beautiful piece of Medieval ecclesiastical architecture, although (and this is entirely a personal opinion) I think the new (2001) stained glass window is not in keeping. Leave a Comment

A stunning example of a Medieval chantry within the Collegiate Church of St Mary, and unique in England. Chantries were special chapels built, usually by bequest, for particular (wealthy, obviously) people. a further bequest provided funds for regular prayers to be said for the soul of the departed (hence 'chantry' from 'chanting'). This one is wonderful, with many twiddly embellishments and even a wall-painting (from the 1600's, I think) said to be based on the Sistine Chapel. Within this chapel lie the tombs of Thomas Beauchamp (Earl of Warwick, 15th century) and Robert Dudley (Earl of Leicester, Queen Elizabeth l's favourite) amongst others. Beautiful. Leave a Comment

A gem of English perpendicular Gothic style, this church was first established in 1123 (by an Earl of Warwick, of course). The chancel and nave were rebuilt in the 14th century, but the original Norman crypt still survives. Within the church itself are a number of particularly interesting things, including a most beautifully twiddly chantry, a tiny but perfectly formed side-chapel and some stunning Medieval tombs. Well worth visiting..............entrance free, but a donation (2GBP suggested) is much appreciated. Leave a Comment

Market Hall museum (with market!) by leics Housed in the Market Hall, this little museum has good displays on local archaeology, geology and natural history as well as the Great Fire of Warwick. It's closed on Mondays (and Sundays out of season), but is otherwise open from 10:00 to 17:00. Entrance is free. Leave a Comment

The Chapel, built over the West Gate to the town, was funded by Thomas Beauchamp and dates from the 14th century. The adjoining Medieval buildings were acquired by Robert Dudley (the one who was Queen Elizabeth l's favourite) in 1571 and used as a hospital for aged soldiers and/ or their wives. The buildings them selves are a fascinating insight into English Medieval domestic architecture, and there is a pretty garden to the rear. The Peacock Garden by mazzap It was no surprise to me to find out that the gardens and grounds of Warwick Castle had been designed by none other than Capability Brown. He must have been one busy man - he seems to have designed most of the stately homes and famous gardens in England! The rambling grounds of Warwick Castle are beautiful, with a wonderful backdrop of the River Avon. Giant Cedar trees, a Rose Garden, topiary peacocks and ornamental fountains are just a few of the things you'll find here. Leave a Comment Address: Warwick Castle grounds

The Warwick Vase by mazzap As you enter the conservatory at Warwick Castle, you will be faced with a huge stone dish placed high on a pedestal. This is a replica of the Warwick Vase, an ancient Roman vase which was excavated in 1771. The original vase is now in Glasgow. Leave a Comment Address: within the conservatory, Warwick Castle

Peacock in full glory! by mazzap Roaming freely around the Peacock Garden are a large number of these graceful creatures. If you are patient (or just lucky!), you will be rewarded with a view of a male peacock with fully opened feathers. Once the fan of feathers is displayed, the peacock will strut about and show off in its full glory for a few minutes. They make a strange loud screeching noise, and unless you are already familiar with the sound, it can leave you wondering who the latest victim of the Torture Chamber is!! Leave a Comment
