Made to measure!

Take a trip down into the dungeons and torture chamber at Warwick Castle - but a word of warning...

all day long they count each member of the small groups of visitors who descend into the cramped, dark, damp underground chamber, and then count them out again......but surely by the end of the day they must get tired of doing this and lose concentration just a teeny bit.......so don't dither when all the others have left or....

...YOU MAY GET LEFT INSIDE OVERNIGHT!!!

In my pic you can see a form of medieval torture that is on display - the 'Hanging Chains'. For a serious crime, your punishment would be to first be measured up to have the chains fitted, then suspended near to the scene of your crime
to die and rot.......hhhmmmmm.......

Lord Leycester Hospital

The Lord Leycester Hospital has been a retirement home for old soldiers since 1571.

Today, the old soldiers who live there give their services towards the running of the Hospital as a tourist attraction in return for their accommodation.

Now, they may be a group of dear old gentlemen with distinguished pasts, but, grumpy old men always behave badly, they are just like the two old men in the balcony on the Muppet Show.

They can be rude and unhelpful, they can be even worse to Americans who ask silly questions (ie Who put that river so close to the Castle? was heard recently). They don't even like each other, let alone visitors!

Don't let this put you off visiting, just be prepared and treat it as part of the character of the place, you could even have some silly questions of your own ready to wind them up a bit.

There were a couple of shops that we thought might be interesting that we thought we would hit on the way out but by the time we finished they were already closed. I thought in the height of tourist season they would be open until at least 5 pm.

Good Advice

Try not to climb the tower of St. Mary's church when the bells are ringing. It is probably best to avoid the trap door too.
