Someone told me if they wanna be sarcastic to a person they dun like, they will say 'send him/her to Coventry'. I wondered and asked why Coventry. The reply I got is 'cos Coventry is dead'. It really is. Leave a Comment

by nsalah Don't worry to much about what you wear but English people aren't always as warm as others. If anyone get's you a present it's a good idea to send them a Thankyou note. Leave a Comment

The saying 'sent to Coventry' (meaning to be ostracised) bagan when supporters of the crown were sent to Coventry to be held in captivity during the English Civil War.

by steventilly The legend of Lady Godiva is set in Coventry. Lady Godiva pleaded with her husband to cut taxes, but he replied that he would 'see her ride naked through the streets first', a challenge she took up. All the residents of Coventry were supposed to shut up their windows and not look. However one guy named Tom couldn't resist taking a peep (hey, tasty naked bird on a horse - who can blame the guy??) and for his troubles he was struck blind - and gave his name to 'peeping toms' the world over. This picture from official Coventry website.

Lady Godiva is to Coventry what Robin Hood is to Nottingham, a character based in history whose story has been embellished through the ages. Lady Godiva rode naked through the streets to protest when her husband, the Earl of Mercia, imposed taxes on the town. The city residents remained indoors, except for Peeping Tom who was struck blind for his curiosity. Every year a parade is held in early June to commemorate the original stripper. Leave a Comment

You might be more familiar with the terms bap and roll but for some strange reason people in Coventry and Nuneaton (a nearby town) call these batches. So if you hear the expression you will now know what it means. You could event try asking for one when you find yourself in a cafe or getting lunch somewhere. You could have a cheese batch, a tuna batch, a ham batch in fact whatever filling you like - and it is a batch!!! Leave a Comment
