The Mitre.: Food in the day. Music at night. (Lower High St.)

by Pauldelabar Updated Nov 21, 2005 262 reviews
    The Mitre.

The Mitre has been long noted for its food offerings at lunchtimes.

Various ales are on offer here, including Draught Guinness.

Music features strongly at night times in the function room upstairs.

As you can see from the picture, the pub is a half timbered black and white building, but it was only built in the 1920's as a Butlers show pub.

The Hogshead: Real ale bar. (Foster Street)

by Pauldelabar Updated Nov 21, 2005 262 reviews
    The Hogshead.

The Hogshead started off as a real ale bar ONLY under the Whitbread flag.

Things changed and the Hogshead chain went their own way, not necessarily for the better.

Real ale can still be obtained here but in lesser variety than when originally set up.

Now the pub caters for the younger crowd and large screen TV does not do it any favours.

Food can still be obtained here, but on a 'warmed up' style, rather than fresh cooked as it was when first started.

    Make your own mind up.

    Price range:
    Good value for money.
    Atmosphere:
    Good most of the time.
    Theme:
    A bit warehose like.
    Opening times:
    From mid day until 11pm.
    Disabled notes:
Many steps. Toilets are upstairs but there is a loo for the disabled on the ground floor.

    Dress Code: Smart casual.

    Price range:
    Excellent value for money.
    Atmosphere:

The Metropolitan: Page to Met. (Market Street)

by Pauldelabar Updated Nov 20, 2005 262 reviews
    Metropolitan.
    1 more image

The Metropolitan used to be a reasonably smart restaurant called 'The Page Arms'.

Now in the light of todays so called customer requirements, it has become a wine bar / night club place to join the rest of the throng 'jumping on the band wagon' and pandering to the younger drinker.

    Still does food.

There are too many places going this way.

    Price range:
    More expensive than normal.
    Atmosphere:
    Average.
    Theme:
    Modern.
    Opening times:
From mid day until 11pm. Closes in afternoon.
    Disabled notes:
2 steps up to the entrance. Toilets narrow.

Dress Code: Smart casual to downright posey.

A cosy and comfortable pub with Bar and very nice Lounge.
