If you are looking for a traditional old drinkers pub in Sutton Coldfield there‘s not many choices around the town centre. The Duke is worth the effort of finding, it‘s very much a locals pub where everyone knows each other but is not unfriendly to the casual visitor. It has a nice community feel to it as well with a notice board showing local sporting fixtures and charitable activities. There is a small three sided bar with one side seemingly facing into a corridor with some attractive snob screens. They have three cask ales and a reputation for good beer.

It was difficult to find much fault with this pub. It's not exceptional but everything they do they do well. There are comfortable seating areas and a fair bit of standing room. Service is friendly and efficient and they serve good homemade food, if a little pricey. Nice décor and what may or may not be a working model railway runs around the ceiling of the back bar. Outside is what looks like an old station platform passenger shelter, now serving as a gazebo for balmy Summer evenings (unfortunately I was there on a rainy Winter evening). They have three real ale pumps and the beer was in good condition. It was lively and buzzing on the Friday night we visited and I suspect it's considered one of the best pubs in Sutton Coldfield.

The Gate claims to be the best music venue in the area and has live acts 7 days a week including some open mic nights. From outside it looks an attractive pub with it's elevated position and leaded windows. Inside it has a bit of a reverse tardis effect, most of the space is taken up by the bar and a stage area and there's very little seating. So get there early if it’s a band you really want to see and be prepared to stand so close to the band that the music could reach ear bleeding levels. Despite that it’s a good place to spend an evening and we enjoyed the couple of hours spent there. Their website shows details of upcoming acts.

Sutton Coldfield is just a 20 minute train journey from Birminham New Street Station and trains are fairly frequent. The train station is close to the town centre and the shopping and nightlife areas.

Like many of our town centre churches these days the Holy Trinity church is looking a bit run down with the surrounding gardens rather unkempt. Admittedly I visited on a cold Winter‘s day and the whole town seemed dour and unwelcoming. The church has a good elevated location at the top of the High Street surveying its parish but almost seems out of place amongst the modernity of the town. Another shameful insight into town centre life in England is that the windows are covered with wire netting to deter the local hooligans.

Be prepared to receive poor service in most of Sutton's public houses. It is a Sutton custom to employ staff who have little or no interest in their Jobs and enjoy ignoring customers. My advise is to catch a train to nearby Lichfield.

    O’Neills, 84a-94a Gracechurch Centre, Sutton Coldfield, B72 1PH

If you’re a teenager looking to blag you way through the bouncers and get drunk in a hot sweaty underground hell-hole with like minded individuals then this is the place to go. If however you have a little more taste you’ll stay away from this O’Neills pub in the shopping centre.
