Be prepared to be hassled by big issue sellers as they as they are places very close to where people need to shop in centre of leeds like marls and spencers. I travelled from the bottom to top of briggate which is a 3 minute journey at most and was asked 12 times by issue sellers and when you say no they begg for either money or cigerettes

Prove your age, when buying alcohol or cigarettes

by traceyspacey Written Jun 2, 2008

There is a campaign in the UK at the moment to challenge under age drinkers and smokers whilst purchasing alcohol and cigarettes. Some supermarkets such as Morrisons are asking people who they think are 25 or under to prove their age (legal age is 18). I am 35 in August and have just been asked to prove my age. I did not have any identification (ID) with me, but I convinced them of my age and I was allowed to continue with my purchase. If you think that you might be asked then make sure that you have your driving licence or passport with you.

Lots of beggars in the city centre

by largerama Written Mar 2, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Im not gonna tell you how you should deal with it, thats up to you, but be prepared that Leeds city centre, especially in busiest parts - around station, Briggate, Park Row, has a lot of beggars and Big Issue sellers. It can almost feel like London at times.

All I will say is that it's up to you whether you give but do not let them be aggressive and make sure they accept 'no' the first time if that's what you say.

  • Agressive Beggars

Leeds is one of my favouite cities but the only downside is the number of beggars and big issue sellers that pester you even when you are sitting outdoors at a pub or cafe. Only in Leeds have I found people asking for money become aggressive and so ungrateful for any coffee/money given to them.
