If you would like to see a thriving traditional English Market - look no farther. King Edward II granted a charter for a market here in 1318. The Black Death (Plague) lead the market to close in 1583 and it was not re-established until 1740. The ornate Market Hall was built in 1904 along with the ornate stone entrances of Kings Way and Queens Way. The name Cloth Hall Street commemorates the heave woolen cloth produced at the adjacent mills for more than a hundred years.

One of the great things is that the Market and most of its 300 traders are members of the Dewsbury Guild and have a code of practice. This includes a warm greeting to customers, a complaints procedure backed by law, and a guarantee to act in a business-like manner. They also have public toilets - a bonus.

Among the stalls you will find excellent second-hand book shops, antiques, fresh fruit, butchers, bakers, tailors, clothes, household goods and hardware. Part of the fun is just finding what you are looking for or just seeing what is on offer. A great place to visit and shop.

    The Market is open:
