by Carnation Motorists crossing Salisbury Plain on the A303 Andover-Wincanton road have a clear view of one of the great wonders of the world. Against a bare skyline looms ancient STONEHENGE, a prehistoric stone circle begun even before Egypt's pyramids. Seen from the road, it's size is not immediately evident, but when the eye catches a glimpse of midget human figures inspecting it, the awesome scale becomes very apparent. Leave a Comment

by Carnation Salisbury is good for adventure, backpacking, bicycle, historical, study, off-road, religious, sightseeing, car and caravan travel. If you are planning to spend a day hiking, take as little as possible, perhaps a small rucksack where you can keep your sandwiches and drinks in. Hiking boots would be appropriate footwear, the surrounding countryside is huge and you will encounter some rough terrain. As a precaution it's always best to take either a warm sweater or jacket as it can get a bit breezy out there. Trousers or jeans would also be more comfortable. The english weather is unpredictable so I'm always prepared! It's a good idea to take some tissue paper and/or baby wipes. It's sod's law that your out there, miles from anywhere, and nature calls! And, of course, if you are on regular medication, please make sure you have enough supplies with you. A mobile phone could come in handy too. Another good idea is to buy all your films and batteries for your camera from your home town and take them with you. You can always use the spares on your next trip. STONEHENGE is situated between Amesbury and Stoke on the A303. This stretch is a good, fast road. The summer brings continuous streams of westbound tourist traffic. Motorists arriving by the side roads may have to queue to get into or cross the flow. Those people travelling by car will expect to pay about 75p-90p per LITRE, depending on what grade you use, that's roughly $5-$6 per gallon, again, depending on the currency exchange at the time. by Carnation Stretching for some 200 square miles north of Salisbury the chalk plain itself was the heartland of prehistoric Britain. The Bronze Age stone circle dates from about 3100BC, when a circular ditch and bank were erected. A thousand years later a two mile avenue, to the River Avon, was built. Some 80 bluestones were imported from Preseli, in S.Wales, over 240 miles away. Leave a Comment

by Carnation The final stage, between about 2000 and 1500BC, included the familiar trilithons, the heart of the temple, the remains of which are still standing. Other ancient sites in the locality include WOODHENGE and YARNBURY CASTLE. The landscape is one of vast, sweeping cornfields which remind me of the North American prairies. Leave a Comment

by Carnation Many of the uplands are roadless and some of it is used for military training and has restricted access. So make sure you dont stray and keep well away from those areas. Leave a Comment

The playing field by LouiseTopp Odstock is 3 miles to the south of Salisbury & in the south-east corner of Odstock's cemetery is the burial place of a legendary local figure, Joshua Scamp, a gipsy who was wrongfully hanged for horse-stealing in 1801. Scamp became a martyr among his people, & each year they gathered around his grave on the anniversary of his death, after first drinking extensively to his memory in the Yew Tree Inn nearby.
One year, the rector & his churchwardens decided to stop the disorderly celebrations by locking the church door & uprooting a briar rose which the gypsies had planted by Scamp's grave. The gypsies who were very upset indeed, put a curse on anyone who should in future lock the church door, & after sudden death befell two who defied the curse, the rector threw the church key into the River Ebble, where it is said still to lie. Another briar rose has been planted by Scamp's grave, marked by a headstone now splitting with age, & the Yew Tree Inn still thrives in this tiny village of stone & flint cottages. St Mary's Church - largely rebuilt in the 1870s in flint & stone - sits alone at one end of the village street. At the other end of the village is The Parsonage, a 17th-century house that was once an inn where Oliver Cromwell is said to have stayed. Leave a Comment
