Debenhams was originally The Saracens Head before becoming The Blue Boar Inn, this is why it's a long a road called Blue Boar Row. In 1485 the Duke of Buckingham was taken to a small yard at the back of a shop, & excecuted for treason against King Ritchard 3rd. There are 3 stone circles there, one day some workemen removed one & all the sprinklers strangly went off causing £1000's worth of damage. On the anniversary of the Dukes death, he comes down from the top attic & walks slowly to the yard where he vanishes. A headless skeleton was found under floorboards.

In the 40's Debenhams was called Style & Garish. One evening in the 1980's a dinner party was being arranged, & 11 places were set. When the boss said there was only 10 people, one of the others said there had been a man in a dark pinned stripped suit hanging about. On searching for intruders, they found no one. There's many wierd & wonderful stories about Debenhams in Salisbury.

What to buy: The sportswear is quite good, & there are some evening wear on the 1st floor. Blude bad ge used to organise ghost walks around the store. There's also a plaque commorating the excecution of the Duke.

The Maltings is a nice example in how an area of old building can be developed for modern purposes meintaining its old charme and calm atmosphere. So, this shopping mall does not disturb your peaceful walk along the river. The old malting houses and other buildings were turned into shops, mostly smaller ones for special needs, like baby shops or florists. Also, a couple of cafés and pubs are here. Unfortunately, it was already discussed, if the area should be re-developed and new big supermarkets and other ugly shops should be built on that place. I just hope that these plans never become reality.

By the way, while I am writing these lines, I just noticed that the sign "BARBER SHOP" on the left hand side of the picture is runed upside down. No idea why... My other picture, showing the Maltings as seen from the south, has some red cloud on it. No idea why...

Salisburys oldest market has been here since the 13th century (that's why everyone looks so tired, har har!), terrible joke. Here you can get almost up to everything (except elephants & race horses!) Held every Tuesday and Saturday, noisy, busy, friendly & full of aromas; from freshly ground coffee & fresh bread to hot donuts (5 for £1.50), spit roasted chicken & fresh flowers. Panico's ice cream is a must, he has a green van & his ice cream is to die for! He can sell you a 5ltr box for £5, and he also does cones etc

What to buy: Anything you can find, the household is a real bargain, petfood is good value.

What to pay: bag of 6 doughnuts for £1.50

Formally known as Haynes, Stonehenge Cycles has been going for years. They are located in Salisbury in Fisherton Street. Mr Haynes began the business in the 1890's in a small shop along Water Lane. Then the business moved to where it is now in Fisherton Street.

There’s a large range of cycling paraphernalia. I am part of a group called C.O.G.S. Cycling Opportunities group for Salisbury, and members are authorized a discount when they produce a membership card.

The staff are very friendly and helpful, and there’s also website and e-mail address. National Bike Week is a great event to look forward to, with lots going on.

The Maltings in Salisbury used to be an old flour mill. The River Avon runs through the middle onto the water Meadows. In the Maltings you can feed the ducks & swans, there’s a green to sit & watch the world go by. There’s a multi-story car park here belonging to Sainsbury’s. This building in Queen Street was built in 1425 by John A.Port, who was a wool merchant & Mayor of Salisbury six times. Inside it has black timbers & fireplaces, & a set of carved stairs. This building is also haunted by the ghost of a cavalair who died of the plague. He has been seen vanishing into the fireplaces, & heard following people up the stairs. Once some heavy ornaments were found in the morning by one of the staff, they were on the floor unbroken.

Watsons sells chinaware & has many figures & items by Royal Doulton, there is also crystal ornaments & glassware for sale. The Elizabethan pannelling still survives, & is often mentioned by the tour guides.

What to buy: Here the cystal is quite nice there are several variaties like:

The Snowman Crystal Tresures, which are hand made by skilled craftsmen, with hand polishing & buffing of the crystal, showing it's natural refractive qualities.

The figures by Daulton are very good, there is a different one out each year.

What to pay: From £10 to £100000!

Next to the entrance of the cathdral is a shop where your bound to find an unsual present or gift. Gadgets inclue the Lava lamp, Union Jack plastered on everything left right and centre (except the cat), wind chimes, dream catchers and lots of other things.

What to buy: Lava lamps, wind chimes, mugs, farting pigs

What to pay: Heaven Knows!
