I do love a good Transport museum, and I'm told that STEAM which is placed in the old engine manufacturing yards on the outskirts of Swindon is excellent.
I'm sorry I can't give a personal view, because my wife says that anybody who want to go and look at old railway engines is a sad git witha bobble hat who needs to get a life.
Well, let's agree to differ.
Entry - About 6 pounds.
Swindon has all the hallmarks of the 'New town' movement - mile upon mile of boring housing / industial estates and a concrete labyrinthine monstrosity in the centre of town.
Whilst comparisons to the eihgth ring of hell would not be unfounded, you can at least escape to the relative calm of 'Old Swindon'. About a mile from the modern centre, it does at least look like it wasn't built as a set for a Terminator of Mad Max movie.
Expect a few reasonable shops / cafes / restaurants, but little of interest in term of anything worth visiting for it's own sake.
The local tourist board know that they are onto something of a loser when you realise that the most interesting thing in this sizeable town is a traffic intersection.
It now has the official title of 'The magic roundabout' which was for many years, in a show of native wit, it's nickname - named after the children's TV show.
It consists, in essence, of five mini-roundabouts set within one full size one. It actually works remarkably well.
I do think however that it could be vastly improved upon by adding a character statue from the series on each of the mini-roundabouts. Dougal, Florence, Zebedee, Mr Rusty and Ermintrude would then really make it a tourist hot-spot the Tourist board could be proud of !
There are two things you have to do if you happen to be in Swindon. The first one is definitely a must in your activity list i.e. pay a visit to the world most innovative roundabout design or in other word "crazy" roundabout. This roundabout is named Magic Roundabout. You don't have to be a genius to tell why they named it Magic Roundabout or why some people called it Idiotic Roundabout. This round about has a main big roundabout in the centre and another 5 small roundabouts surrounding the main roundabout. It is a mess and very confusing for drivers to figure out how to use it during the rush hours. Amazingly this roundabout has the lowest accident rate as compared to others because of every user slow down and be very cautios when they are using it hence less chance for accident.
The second thing to do is to do shopping in Swindon's Outlet Village. This outlet village provides a place for bargain hunters to do their shopping and also a good place for the local to wander around and to kill their time in this bloody boring town.
