Farnham Things to Do

  • Farnham Castle

Farnham Castle stands on a wooded hillside to the north of the town. It was built as an episcopal fortress by the Bishops of Winchester. It is set in 5 acres of gardens overlooking the town centre. The first castle was built by bishop Henry of Blois, the grandson of William the Conqueror. At this time the Bishop's lands spread all the way from...

  • Ruins of the Waverley Abbey

The ruins of this almost forgotten monastery are set in a tranquil meadow beside the River Wey. All that remains at the site is an atmospheric evocation of the original abbey through some remaining frater arches. Perhaps the most noteworthy fragment to remain standing is the undercroft of the lay brothers refectory. A good section of 13th century...

  • Farnham beer festival

The annual Farnham beer festival (Beerex) is the longest running beer festival held at a single location in the world. It was started in 1977, so year 2007 saw the festival being organised for the 31st time at the Farnham Maltings. It provides a great opportunity to sample a selection of some fine real aleas (+some mediocre ones too), ciders and...

  • Birdworld

Birdworld is set on 26 acres of beautiful parkland and landscaped gardens. The gardens are being kept up-to-date with selected areas chosen for re-landscaping such as the willow structure in woodland walk, but many mature trees create the finer structure. The topiary garden, shrub and herbaceous borders, herb beds, cottage gardens and lawns, bulbs...

  • Farnham Park - a medieval deer park

The 320 acre park land dates back to the middle ages when it was a deer park belonging to the Bishop of Winchester. The park was used as the hunting ground for royalty. At the time, it was known either as the New or Little Park. The majority of the park consists of large areas of grassland, old oak trees, winding streams and various ponds. It also...

  • The Hogs Back Brewery

The independent Hogs Back Brewery (established in 1992) is located in the nearby village of Tongham. The bewery is located in 18th century farm buildings. Their first ever brew of 10 barrels was sold out through a handful of local pubs. After 15 years, they brew over 140 barrels every week and supply over 500 outlets. There are regular brewery...

Farnham Restaurants

  • Restaurant in an old mill

This is a restaurant that is located in an old mill, with the mill wheel still in situ. The setting is very nice and there is a river (Whitewater) flowing through the grounds as well as a boating lake (complete with swans and ducks around). They also have croquet facilities as well as an outdoors and indoors children's play areas. The indoor play...

  • Central Thailand cuisine

Thai Lord is run by a charming couple called Mr and Mrs Roong who are in their 50s or 60s or something. It offers authentic Thai cuisine that has not been adapted to appease the local tastes unlike many other places. The style of cooking is from the central Thailand, with emphasis on Bangkok. Dishes are mostly medium in spicy strength although they...

  • Local pub in a small village

The Plume of Feathers is set in a 500 year old hostelry that still has old oak beams and inglenook fireplaces in place. Apparently, there is also a ghost in the pub... They offer pretty wide menu with innovative modern cooking such as guinea fowl, rack of lamb, char-grilled steak and duck breast. There is a proper restaurant bit in the back as well...

  • Sea food in the suburbs

The Lobster Pot opened its doors in May 2005 in a renovated pub that was empty for quite a while before that. Although Lobster Pot looks like a pub from outside, it’s really a highly specialised fish restaurant. Their menu includes over 30 starters, 25 meat, 20 fish and 12 vegetarian main courses. It is almost difficult to choose from so many...

  • Italian

There are at least three other places in Farnham that do very similar menu as Prezzo (pizza, pasta, risotto, salads and chicken meals). They are also similarly priced, so when I had a chance to try something else than your average Pizza Express or Chez Gerard, I decided to try Prezzo instead.I went there for the first time in August 2007 and I must...

  • My local Indian

You'll be glad to know that every time you go to this restaurant, you'll get whatever you order made in the exactly same way as before and will probably taste exactly the same as well. This is because Gulshan still employs the same chef as did when it was established in 1989. I was wondering why… The restaurant doesn't look much from outside as it...

  • Beautiful riverside setting

The nice little pub is located in a converted historic mill along a river. The water wheel is still working and can be viewed inside the pub. They have a large beer garden overlooking the water. I would imagine it’s very popular wedding reception venue and they have recently acquired a civil wedding license. Service is very friendly and generally...

  • A local pub with great food

This pub is set in the middle of a roundabout(!). It's easy to miss it when you ride on the roundabout and the noise of the traffic and the exhaust fumes from the cars can be a bit off putting, but this is pub is great for real ales (including many local beers), fresh, good quality food and friendly staff. The whole pub is non-smoking due to the...

  • Indian is the new English food ;-)

I have visited the Darjeeling a few years ago. I can't remember much about that visit except that there was nothing wrong about the food, service or anything else. I visited the restaurant again more recently and did not find anything wrong this time either. The resturant was recently extended to the neighboring property that used to function as a...

  • On the hight street or just off it

What a charming name.. I could put you straight off if you really think about.I have been here a few times. It delivers alright quality food and has a nice enough atmosphere at the bar as well as the restaurant bit itself. It is nothing mind pogging, but you know that the quality is there though. There are currently 62 Slug and Lettuces across the...

  • Cuisine from Delhi, Agra & Jaipur

This restaurant is not exactly in Farnham, but I didn't want to create a whole new page for the town, Fleet, where it is in, so I included it in here. They used to do a great buffet on Sundays. However, those days are long gone. Now they just serve dishes off the menu and a bit of downside is that it is rather pricy - the starters are around £4 and...

  • French Salon de Thé in provincial...

France is really a hot thing in the UK. For some reason all the finest eateries are either French or Italian.. or whatever else except British!! ;-)Maison Blanc is open from morning (not too early though) to early evening, so you most probably going to get something to eat there at lunchtime or maybe in the afternoon. Peculiarly they recruit staff...

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I’ve only been here once or twice, but it is a pretty cool pub and the atmosphere is nice and chilled out. One of the great assets of this pub is the rich cross section of different crowd. There are apparently, a lot of students at times, so it can get rather packed, but there is always somewhere to sit (or at least to stand), as they have a garden at the back of the pub. There is also a pool room upstairs as well as a jukebox.

    Pub facilities/features:
Pool table (upstairs), Fruit machines, Table football, Pinball
    Real ale
    Car park

Farnham Shopping

  • Reclamation yard

This reclamation yard is great for people doing up their houses and a bit of occasional DIY every now and then. They have all types of demolition materials that come from their demo sites including doors, windows, flooring, boards, gates, timber, oak beams, bricks, tiles, slates, chimney pots etc. They also produce flooring board from reclaimed...

  • Waiting for an eternal summer

A barbeque shop in Farnham??? Yep. This summer's been a washout, but there is and has been a barbeque shop in Farnham for several years now. I think any Ozzie guys visiting should definitely check this joint out! The range is extensive and includes both gas and charcoal barbeques as well as all the products imaginable anything to do with barbecuing...

  • Shopping along a cobbled pathway

A shopping alley called 'The Lion & Lamb' in town centre is named after a former coaching inn. It is tucked away from the traffic and hustle and bustle of the main street, which is nice for a chance. The development is surrounded by some buildings of historical interest and it has won some awards in the past. You can find some boutiques selling...

Farnham Favorites

Favorite thing: When you arrive try to park in Castle Street. It's the most popular street to live in and a good place to start exploring the town. There is a short steep walk to the castle from one end and the shops are at the other.
