Gatwick is BY FAR less overcrowded than Heathrow!

I have been to gatwick 4 times and comparison with london heathrow the population of gatwick airport is scarce. I mean yes it can be overcrowded in the right concentrations of time but it is generally moveable and less stressful getting through crowds. Unlike heathrow where it can be like going through a maze to even reach the metal detectors, you CAN walk straight ahead in Gatwick without being on the human dodgems. I like that airport, but I still would reach the airport early enough because there IS always that possibility that it can be overcrowded though.

Waiting for your flight at Gatwick

Gatwick has an interesting way of corraling folk before their flight leaves----there is a main waiting area with lots of monitors showing flights and the gates from which they are leaving---you have to wait here in this area until about 30-40 minutes before your flight is scheduled to leave, and then your gate number will pop up on the monitors...Everyone then hurries along towards their gates and begin boarding. I had no problems except a little more anxiety than normal, since we all seemed to get on board in time.

Thomas Cook stand, Gatwick

Gatwick airport is large!! It has two terminals, north and south, connected by monorail, make sure you know which one you're flying from!!

We were quite impressed with the efficiency, having only Manchester to compare it with. We were there three hours before our plane took off but even so, the queue at the check-in desks for Thomas Cook was building up nicely. I guess we were checked in within half an hour and then we went through security, which took another 10 mins or so. Very strict here, we managed to go through the only xray that insisted you had to take your shoes off, so slightly slower than the other desks. Still, we got through everything without making anything bleep so that was a bonus!!

Once through security, there are plenty of cafes and seats where you can actually sit and watch the aeroplanes taking off and landing. This was a great distraction, having quite a while to wait before we boarded our plane.

Philip being Philip JUST had to have a baguette from a cafe. He chose a salami and mozzarella panini, costing £4 and it was a disgrace, it was stale. We should have made a fuss but to be honest, we couldn't be bothered stirring thins at the beginning of our holiday. A small bottle of fresh orange juice cost £1.70 and a pint of lager, £3.25. Ah well, cheaper than the aeroplane, no doubt!!

Oh, the highlight, we saw Iron Maiden's plane taking off!!
