Street performance

by Sjalen

Whatever you do, don't miss a street performance when in Britain as it has some of the best I have ever seen. Some entertainers are not that special but others have me in tears of laughter. You will find plenty in London's Covent Garden but also in Edinburgh during the festival and in touristy places such as Bath and York. My fondest memory of street performers is this lot seen in the picture: the Inside Out Theatre, doing their version of James Bond - The Man with the Golden Trumpet. I was lucky to catch them first at Edinburgh and later in Covent Garden when I moved to London. Oh the happiness when I encoutered them yet again! :))) "No Coca Cola, No Levis, No McDonalds - this is WAR!"

by UKDaisy

From 14 February 2006, you can no longer sign for your credit card transactions in the UK if your card has been allocated a PIN number. If your card does have a PIN, then make sure you memorise it before trying to use your credit card.If your card does not have a PIN, then you will be required to sign for your transaction.

At certain times of the year...

by hotlipz

At certain times of the year it's difficult to understand what anyone who has not lived here all their life could possibly find attractive about England! The sky is grey, it's damp, cold and generally depressing! BUT - as soon as the buds start to come out on trees, the spring flowers bloom, the air starts to smell fresh and the wildlife reappears - I then know why I only leave this island for my own holidays in autumn and winter. There are far too many places of interest to mention - England is steeped in history so I'll just mention a few places I know well. One I would certainly recommend is Hampton Court Palace( just a few miles from London) - once home to Henry VIII. There are too many snippets of our history to mention here (one is the origin of tennis which was invented here and you can still see the actual court) All I can say is see the place for yourself it's a beautiful piece...

Free Airport Parking

by Duncrieviedude

If you live in the UK and want cheap airport parking, shop at Tesco. I hate them as well as they're taking over the world but you can exchange their Clubcard Vouchers for 4 times their face value in Deal Tokens. I have just used ?15 of vouchers to park for 17 days at Manchester which would have cost ?60. As the vouchers are effectively 'free' it's not really cost me anything

Castles

by ginguba

If you're into castles (and the remains) you'll have loads to see in UK. Loads of imposing monuments, just sad that most of them are in ruins, due to all the battles they had in their territory. Most of them are tourists stops, wich has the advantage that they're really well sinalized and you can learn about all the history about it.The pic is from kidwell castle, in wales, it began to be constructed in the 12th century to prevent attacks to South Wales

The Big Red Bus

by vikendall

Probably the best deal in Europe, including the UK, is the Big Red Bus. Nearly all port cities have a Big Red Bus tour, which is relatively cheap, considering a couple trips on the bus and you have spent as much as a 24 hr. pass costs. In London, for example, It costs about 14 Pounds for a pass, allowing you to get on and get off at the designated stops, for a 24 hr. period. I suggest you get a map, familiarized yourself with the signs that designate a stop, and have a blast. You will pass everything in London, get a good overview on the layout of the city, and save a lot on the feet, and the wallet. The trip includes a free pass to ride on a glass top boat on the Thames, which is one of the best trips in London. Things look so different from the water side. You definately don't want to miss this chance to see London at a reasonable price, and have a pretty good tour guide as part of the...

Who was Capability Brown?

by Tom_Fields

Lancelot Brown (1715-1783) was Britain's most famous landscape architect. He acquired his unusual nickname because he often said that a given plot of land had "great capabilities". In his hands, it did. He designed the gardens at many of Britain's most beautiful country manor homes, including Blenheim Palace, Audley End House, Chatsworth, Warwick Castle, Burghley House, Wimpole Hall, Stowe Landscape Garden, Harewood House, and Ickworth House, to name a few. For more about him, go to:http://capabilitybrown.com/default.asp

Manners

by ginte

It is useful to know what’s acceptable and what’s not on a day to day basis.MAKE SURE YOU…………1. Go the bar to order your drinks and pay for them once they have been served.2. Shake hands with someone on first meeting them.3. Buy ‘rounds’. You rarely pay just your own drink, but should watch out for people with empty glasses first, then ask them what they would like to have, and fetch the drinks at the bar. In big groups people tend to split into subgroups to buy ‘rounds’.4. Say “please” and “thank you” as much as possible.5. Say “excuse me” if you knock into someone, or would like them to get out of your way. It’s quite common to hear English people saying “excuse me” even if it is the fault of the other person!6. Make sure you’re punctual. Timekeeping is important here.7. Cover your mouth with your hand when coughing or yawning.8. Try a small amount of each dish at a supper, even if you...
