Money

by ginte

British currency is the pound sterling (£) which is divided into 100 pence (p). Notes are divided into denominations of £5, £10, £20 and £50, while coins come in smaller denominations of £2, £1, 50p, 20p, 10, 2p and 1p. As a general rule, it's wise to keep a good supply of change as some stores may refuse to change £20 and £50 notes for smaller purchases.

Baskets and Baked Beans.

by lou31

There were two things that puzzled me about life in the UK. One was the absence of trolleys in supermarkets and how everyone buying groceries used little baskets. And two was everyone's love of baked beans. It seems that people must shop daily for their groceries. Either that or they don't eat much.I can't see the reasoning for doing this. It can't be any cheaper doing it that way. It would cost less in the long run if you filled up a trolley for a weeks supply. For one it saves money on fuel travelling to and from the supermarkets. It would save spending extra money on impulse buying. It's well known that each time you go shopping there are always 2 or 3 things you pop in that you really don't need. So less trips means less costly treats.I found this basket thing everywhere I went. From Marks & Spencers in London to a small village in Scotland. Now the baked beans. Before I go any further...

Visit The West Country.

by colin_bramso

You should try to visit The West Country, which is the most popular holiday area for the British. You can see why - the countryside is gently rolling in parts and ruggedly dramatic in others , seaside resorts, beautiful coastline and very pretty villages. The photo is of the main street of Clovelly in Devon, which leads down to the tiny picturesque harbour.

Visit the real England.

by colin_bramso

If you visit the UK you must spend some time in London of course. But DO spend some time in the real Britain - the countryside and villages. Get out of the car and just stroll around the streets and lanes. Some of the cottages and gardens you'll see are stunning. ...the long summer evenings, with the sun not setting until 9.30 or later. And the social life of village pubs. The best experience is to combine the two - sit in the garden of a village pub on a warm evening as you watch the sun set.

Maps

by Galahad

The best maps for the whole of the UK are the semi-official government published maps - Ordnance Survey. The come in lots of different scales. The ones I use most are for walking and are called "Explorer". They have Orange covers and are in a scale of 1:25000 (ie 4cm to 1km). They are especially marked for the horse rider, walker and cyclist. They also have viewpoints marked on them. The motoring versions have red covers and are called "Landmark" and smaller scale and bound book versions.

If you are arriving London from Europe specially if from Paris or from Brussels, Eurostar is a much better & cheaper option to do the journey, moreover Eurostar arrives and departs from London’s waterloo station which is in the city centre & you save expensive pounds on going to & from Heathrow or other London airports. If you are coming by Air, the tube of London comes handy, it’s a faster & cheaper means to enter the London city.If you plan to travel around London city all by yourself, its better you buy a One day Travel Pass, It costs 5.20 Pounds and is valid on Buses, Tube & rails for unlimited travel for one day. Most of the sightseeing places & tourist attractions are within Zone 1 & 2 so this will save you a lot of money. You can book many tourist attractions of London via Internet, such as ticket of Madam Tussad’s, London eye, this will save you a pound or two on the ticket price,...

Trains

by J.I.M

The UK can have poor train service sometimes. Don't be surprised if your train gets delayed or isn't particularly comfortable. Transport is quite a big issue and the government is always trying to improve it, but our trains are not as good as in most other European countries.
