Take a day trip to Stonehenge.

by samija

Visit Stonehenge. It's a really popular place among tourists so in order to fully enjoy the experience visit it during unpopular tourist hours - early in the morning or late in the evening. Check the open hours before you go (www.stonehenge.co.uk).Stonehenge is fenced in order to protect it from the spontanenous 'souvenier collectors' and stone climbers (and to make a few bucks). You must pay to get in.Take an audio tour. Pick up your walkie talkie thingie at the corner of the souvenier shop. While you're walking along the path around the stone circle you will see numbers on the ground. Punch the number into the device and you may listen the guide tell you interesting things about the stone circle: what it (presumably) was used for, how it was build, myths, etc. While you're there, don't forget to just sit down, chill out and let your mind wander.

If you have young children, they will just love looking in the rock pools here, trying to find small crabs and fishes, shrimps and other sea-life. The main beach is guarded by Lifeguards, so don't be tempted to bathe near the rocks!

National Childrens Homes

NCH helps the lives of the UK's most susceptible children and young people by offering them varied, novel and receptive services and by campaigning for change.Their projects are various because they are developed in answer to local needs. They fall into three broad titles categories. For children at risk they give:• family centers that specialize in serving families where there is a child protection concern • Sexual abuse treatment centers • residential, foster care and adoption services for children in care • schools for children with special educational needs.• For families in need of support we provide:• neighborhood family and community centres • short break projects that support disabled children and their families • projects for young carers • child-focused mediation for divorcing and separating parents • services for young children including the government initiative Sure Start.•...

History all around.

by colin_bramso

Many of the towns and cities have managed to preserve parts of their ancient buildings. If you are interested in history, or even architecture and design, you should look out for them. The photo is part of the wall which protected the city of Southampton, and dates from as long ago as 1150. This is The Bargate, the main entrance on what was then the northern side of the city.

THE WITCHES OF WINDSOR

by iris2002

The Witches of WindsorOn the 26th of February, 1580, four Berkshire women were tried at Abingdon for witchcraft. The accused were Elizabeth Stile, of Windsor, Mother Dutten, of Clewer, Mother Devell, of Windsor, and Mother Margaret, who lived at the Windsor Almshouse. They were said to have had meetings at the rear of Master Dodge's house in The Pittes. At these meetings they were joined by two other witches - Father Rosimond, a widower from Farnham, and his daughter. The leader of the group was supposed to have been Mother Seidre, another resident of the Windsor Almshouse, but she had died some time before the trial. Margaret Murray, an influential writer on witchcraft considered this shape-shifting as pointing to Rosimond being the chief of the witches. If this was so, it is surprising that he was not arraigned with the others. .... continued.... Also at the trial an ostler gave...

Windsor - the ROYAL experience

by iris2002

What struck me first when getting off the train at Windsor Royal Station was the lovely setting and quaint cobble stone and stalls. It's not so much of a train station then landing bang in the middle of a very attractive market & shopping area.... cobble stones and all. There is mostly a great perfume in the air as "Crabtree&Evelyn" Perfume store is right at the corner of the rail tracks...and then you turn the corner swinging by Cafe'Rouge, Cafe Nero with a sweet scent of almond croissants and cappuccino... (yummi)... so it's a sensual experience actually :)!Then you got the castle on the hill which you will see - throning above the river Thames as you take the last long turn with the train into Windsor... it's like out of a fairy tale... swans and geese (to the thousands!!!) in front of it and all images worthy of a postcard.Windsor has a slower pace (even though so close to London) it...

The Tower of London. It's...

by Morepork

The Tower of London. It's steeped in history as is the whole country. Coming from New Zealand, we only have 200 yrs. of known history so it was weird to know that we were walking the paths of our ancestors from hundreds of years ago. I sure took a sudden interest in history. There are so many fondest memories of UK. One was visiting a friend who is a Beefeater at the Tower of London. Stonehenge did something to me which I can't describe ! And travelling the English Countryside is something else.Visiting muesemsm andart galleries were fun. I sspent a day at the Naval Academy and visited the 'Cutty Sark' the tea clipper which held the record for crossing the Altlantic many times.

the only down side, changing Euros into pounds...or having to ATM the pounds, a much better deal...bad exchange-more expensive in the north than in the rest of Ireland...visit local pubs in the neighborhoods-have to hunt them down in the city centre...tucked in side streets...i don't stand in a line to get into a pub, in any country! the people i met in Northern Ireland were wonderful and gracious...and it's not dangerous, which is what everyone in America thinks...we lead sheltered, uninformed lives, for the most part, in the States...honest-i've lived abroad...that's all it take for the realization!
