No outdoor shops for ages, then 3 come along together.........! Yes, Hathersage isn't short of suppliers of clothing and equipment for the Great Outdoors.
The Square is sited where the Hathersage Inn used to operate. It was once known as the Ordnance Arms. The inn was built in 1808, by one of the Shuttleworth family who had fought in the American War of Independence as an officer in the Royal Artillery.
The shops at the rear of the car park were originally the stables and carriage house.
The Square specialises in specialist walking clothes and equipment, with names such as North Face, Mammut, Patagonia,Berghaus, Icebreaker, Merrell, Salomon, Royal Robbins etc.
It is set out on 2 floors, with goods displayed attractively in open rooms.
They endeaver to provide " everything you need to ensure you get through a day on the hill and make it back to the pub for the evening"
There was a Sale on on the upper floor.
Friendly, helpful staff.
I spotted a skirt that I liked...and it fitted! When I went to pay, I realised that I'd left my cards at home -probably a good move! I asked if they could save it for me, and I'd collect it at my next visit - No problem ..... without hesitation it was wrapped up, and noted on the PC that I'd be collecting it - they didn't even ask for a deposit.

One of my favourite shops in Sheffield is CCC -well OK, it's now known officially as Go Outdoors, but everyone I know still calls it CCC. So, I was pleased to see that they now have a branch in Hathersage. Well, they're opening new branches all the time....Recession, What recession??? People staying at home for holidays, a resurgence in camping, particularly due to increasing festivals, plus our usual climate has meant this company is smiling all the way to the bank!
This shop is a fraction of the size of the one off Bramall Lane, but it still stocks a wide range.
Handy for if it rains or suddenly goes chilly...and you've forgotten to bring a waterproof/fleece etc, or if you've lost or broken a piece of equipment while camping/walking etc. Visiting this shop might even tempt you to go camping or walking for the first time!
Cheaper than Outside, which is across the road - also probably less daunting for the novice walker/camper etc. The staff here are friendly and helpful.
Ask for their discount card, if it's not offered, for good discounts off their goods.
Gift Vouchers available.
On line shopping
Festival page - equipment/clothing etc 'Simply the Fest' - sign up online for festival updates and offers.

I first became aware of this shop in 1987, when it had just opened - I used to make and sell jewelery at Craft Fairs etc, and was approached by a woman who asked if I 'did wholesale.' on chatting further, she explained about this shop, and thought that my earrings etc would sell there.
So, for a few enjoyable years, I used to catch the train to Hathersage and 'do business'.
The shop no longer sells as many gifts as it used to do, but has expanded -it also has a branch at Calver as well as Manchester and Harrogate, plus on-line shopping.
Rooms are laid out in categories - clothing, boots, rock climbing equipment and books, books and maps.
Some camping equipment plus post cards and a few gifts.
Upstairs is a cafe which is popular with the climbing fraternity - an extensive menu of food and drinks.
I always like the atmosphere of this place, and its open spaces. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable.
The website has a lot of useful information and advice- between 09.00 -17.00 there is an online 'live chat' service for any queries.
Opening Times
Mon-Fri 09:30-17:30
Weekend 09:30-18:00
Customer Car Park to the rear of the shop- entrance at side of petrol station
What to buy: If you're planning a serious trek, or need some advice, this is the place to come to. It's not cheap ( they do hold discount sales) but here you'll find the leading names in clothing and equipment.
What to pay: From a few pence to enough to make your bank manager weep!
