Ilford Restaurants

  • by withamwanderer Updated Nov 7, 2013

Visited this fairly new Indo Chinese restaurant in Ilford on the recommendation of my friends Mike and Shelley who live locally. They were very impressed and so was I. It was certainly worth the long trek from Witham in Essex.

Instead of a regular menu, you mix and match from 3 sections and then add 2 fresh vegetables. You start with your base, which could be rice, noodles, biryani or a couple of other choices. Then you add your protein .. e.g. chicken, tofu, tiger prawns etc. Then you add a sauce for example Thai green curry, Madras, Vindaloo or quite a few others and finally top it off with a couple of vegetables.

I loved watching the guys put the dish together right before my eyes and then cooking it fresh in a wok behind a glass screen. The aroma was unbelievable.

It's quite a small establishment, smartly and trendily decorated with only room for perhaps 15-20 diners, sitting on chunky wooden benches. There is also a thriving takeaway and delivery trade.

The guys who work there are also the owners and are genuinely interested in what you think about the food. I got the feeling "kaizen" was the philosophy here....gradual but continuous improvement.

Food is served in American style boxes in medium and large portions. With a few exceptions everything is priced the same at either £4.95 or £5.95 for the main courses. There are starters, like tasty samosas and luxury deserts to die for from "artisan" supplier Taywell Ice Creams.

We had a great night - I took a menu home to show to the Witham Wifey and hope to persuade her to wander over to Ilford to give it a try real soon.
