Bellie's Brae bar ( former White Horse): Folk music sessions

Bellie's Brae is a really excellent pub, you are certain of a warm welcome at this cosy establishment. It's right in the centre of town.

Bellie's brae is one of the few "live music" establishments in Kirriemuir and they host events during the "Hairst" ( harvest) which is so much a feature of the Angus folk scene. Don't be put off by the dour, unwelcoming faces of these performers who meet regularly to "hand down the living tradition" of the same old tunes. One of these tunes is, in fact "Aunty Mary Had a Canary", and you don't often get the chance to hear adults playing THAT nowadays.

Like most Scottish folk sessions, this one does suffer from an over abundance of young ladies learning to play the fiddle. It's quite interesting to watch, because their way of learning is to follow the principal fiddler. This results in a gigantic "fiddle diddle" which can at times be quite overwhelming!

When they play a slow tune which - half way through- sudenly segues into a FAST tune, don't be alarmed if some of the audience shout "Heeuughhh!". This is an old Celtique tradition which the overseas visitor will find fascinating.

Dress Code: Informal dress code.

The Roods, and Camera Obscura: Regular nightly parade of vintage cars

When you visit kirriemuir don't miss our notable nightly tradition, when spotty youths drive their old cars up and down the steep street called the "Roods". The object of this exercise, apparently, is to go to the car park at the Camera Obscura. Having got there, they immediately come back DOWN the Roods.
Having a noisy exhaust pipe carries tremendous prestige within the youth culture of Kirriemuir. This interesting cultural tradition should not be missed.

Dress Code: Any type of "sports leisure wear" is appropriate. remember to wear a pair of imitation "designer" sunglasses on your head though.
