Stopped at northern viewpoint by the bridge

Heading south, this is the first viewpoint you arrive at, close to the kylesku Bridge. There is a large parking area, so take advantage. From here you are rewarded with a spectacular landscape, the blue water of Loch a Chairn Bhain with the mighty twin peaks of Quinag towering behind. I had a good look for seals and otters but my luck was not in, not a sight of either of these elusive creatures today.

There is a plaque in the car park commemorating the opening of the bridge, in 1984, by the Queen. There's also a memorial to the X11th submarine flotilla ( a mini sub) that trained in the lochs here, from 1943.

The Bridge Itself....

A fine construction.

Kylesku bridge, opened in 1984 by the Queen, is a work of art and it's beautiful curved design has won numerous design and construction awards.

The 276 metre curved road bridge sweeps over130 metre stretch of water, with the sea Lochs Glendhu and Glencoul on it's inland side and Loch a Chairn Bain on it's seaward side. No roads circumnavigate the lochs, the nearest stretch being the B869 on the southern side of Loch a Chairn Bain, heading towards Drumbeg. As you can imagine, the scenery is remote and wild with the mountains towering all around and civilization is extremely scant. What a place to live!!

From the southbound parking area, follow the path a little and you'll come to in information board, giving details of how the bridge was built. The website on this tip also explains it all, to those with an engineering mind.

No such thing as Scotch Mist

There is a saying in Scotland which suggest Scotch Mist doesn't exsist when you are looking for something right before your eyes. We could hardly beleive the senario opening up before us as we watched in wonder while Mother Nature put on one of her best shows. The cold air from the waters of Loch a Chairn Bhain (the white cairn loch) rose into the hot air of a summers day to create a most magical effect. We watched together with just a few other tourist in astonished silence. Even the telegraph posts were tranformed in the magic the mist provided. I could have been anywhere on this Earth, but no, I was in Sutherland to witness the effects of weather again with a good result. Memories really are made of this!

Kylesku Bridge

The Kylesku bridge is actually found in Kylestrome - an odd fact but named after the ferries which sailed from Kylesku to transport people across the waters of the Loch to cut the distance on the long road to Lairg. On an earlier visit (see my Unapool page) we left Kylesku and travelled on the 'B' road to Lochinver passing Drumbeg. This visit we had to see this almost famous bridge and not bypass it this time. The bridge was built by Morrison Construction and incorporates a smooth curved design. The commemorative stone stands nearby and mirrors the supports structure. The bridge was opened on the Eighteenth of August 1984 by Queen Elizabeth ll. It won't take long to cross as it is only 276 meters long. The views looking towards the bridge and beyond were truely stunning but nearly outdone by the many wild flowers, grasses and heather blooming in the spectacular sunshine.

View from the south

Just as you have crossed the bridge, there is a parking area on your left, with views to the old crossing and of the underside of the bridge. Strangely, we were the only people stopped in this park. I had a wander down the path to have a look at the bridge and then to a viewpoint with a plaque, which gave information on how the bridge was built.

On the second photo, you can see the old jetty for the ferry crossing.

Wander Down To The Village

Heading towards Kylesku jetty.

As we were so close to the village of Kylesku, we decided to take a look and maybe even have lunch at the hotel.

First problem; parking. We drove to the village parking, which was full so as there wasn't room to turn round, we then had to back down the road until we could do a u turn and park in a large layby from which we walked to the village.

In the photos, you'll see a picture of the small post office, it must be a life-saver for the village.. There is also a telephone box here, very useful as we found mobile reception very limited in the northern Highlands.

We had a look at the menu at the Kylesku Hotel but to be honest, we couldn't see anything we really fancied, it was a bit fancy for us (I know we are Philistines!!) being mainly seafood, and even then, nothing that jumped out at us, so as usual, ended up having lunch in the van.

As well as the trip boats to Kerracher Gardens and the 650 ft. Eas-Coul- Aulin waterfall, there are a few local fishing boats moored up. If we had been staying around here, I would love to have seen both the falls and gardens. Ah well, maybe next time.......
