    Planespotting...

Lakenheath is 1 of 3 airbases within a radius of 5km, operated by the USAF on the Norfolk/Suffolk border...
Although the base is a militarily sensitive area, & there is no admission onto the actual base, unlike in other countries, where you can be arrested & held on charges of spying, just for loitering around airfields, not only are planespotters/photographers tolerated, there is even a viewing enclosure provided for them at the end of the main runway...
Whether or not you are an actual 'planespotter' &/or military enthusiast, the sight & sound of side-by-side F-15 Eagles taking off, 1 beside the other, in a rush of ear-cracking power, is something to be experienced at least once...
Impressive as the F-15 & occassional F-10 tankbuster, are in real life, it's rather a shame that the base is no longer home to the slick & slinky, but now decommissioned F-111 (- as stunning a jet fighter as has ever been created, in my opinion...)
Not only fighter jets use Lakenheath, but also heavy military transport planes, such as the C5 Galaxy - you can never be sure waht will arrive or take-off...
It was from Lakenheath in 1986, that the American Statue 0f Liberty Wing bomber group, launched a controversial mission against Libya, known as '0peration El Dorado Canyon' - which resulted in the UNOFFICIAL base acronym: 'L.I.B.Y.A...'
    (Lakenheath Is Bombing Your Ars!)
The symbol of the 48th Fighter Wing is the Statue 0f Liberty, which is flown at the base, together with the Stars & Stripes, at this outpost of the US military in rural, agricultural, Breckland...
Any visitor to the area should also be sure to travel to the neighbouring village of Feltwell, where the main attraction is also the military emplacements of 2 'golfball' type, early warning radar detectors...
RAF Feltwell is a shared base with US military personnel, but the main security presence at the main gate, are USAF servicemen - unmistakable in their blue uniforms (I know I'm not the only person who thinks they look like real-life, Gerry Anderson THUNDERBIRDS characters...)
At the time of writing, there are plans to reduce US staffing at these bases by 1600 - with the possibility of the full withdrawal of USAF - pending peace is maintained on mainland Europe - so if you wish to see the base fully operational, then be sure to do so during 2014
All 3 bases are easily located, Lakenheath's main runway actually crossing the B1065 - Barton Mills to Brandon road, while Feltwell being just 5km further along from here...

    Lakenheath F-16 Eagles

A favorite past-time of the local Anglo populous is to watch aircraft take off and land at the nearby RAF Lakenheath, home to a US fighter wing. Tight security in the wake of global terrorism has decrease activities to enjoy, but there is still some interaction with the sights and sound of freedom.
