by St_Vincent The Cave Hill Country Park is open every day from dawn until dusk and is free to enter and there are a number of entrances. There are three marked walks around the park, firstly the Castle Trail of about 30 minutes that takes in both the maze and the castle. Then there is the Estate Trail which should take around an hour and finally the more challenging Cave Hill Trail that goes up past the caves and old iron mines to McArt’s Fort and will take around 2 and a half hours. I have to admit I opted for the easy one but still got some good views. The park is also home to two nature reserves, a castle, a maze and the zoological gardens.

Orchids in the Tropical Ravine by diamond_skies The Botanic Gardens, located next door to the main Queen's University buildings, is a lovely place for a walk on a sunny day. Not far from the main entrance, you will see a small tree in a cage. This is Belfast's wollemy pine and is caged for it's own protection as they are so rare. Further on, you can't miss the gorgeous Victorian Palm House, a precursor to the glass house at Kew Gardens. Nearby is the Victorian Tropical Ravine, which houses many tropical species including bananas and orchids. At the back there are 3 ponds with fish in them - always an attraction for the youngsters! The hours of opening vary with the season and are posted just inside the gate (for the gardens), and on the doors of the Palm House and the Tropical Ravine. Check out the website for up to date information on times. It is all free! Leave a Comment

Belfast is dotted with parks - each with a different feel. From the Victorian- style Botanic Park near Queens University to the Waterworks in the working-class north of the city you will see Belfast citizens at rest and play. Take a Walk in the Park, It's great to take a walk in the park, especially in Autumn. You can enjoy a coffee in the Botanic Area, check out the University and walk through Botanic Gardens - which has lovely Green houses. It is also home to the Ulster Museum. My favourite local park is Ormeau Park, further on up the Ormeau Road there are nice coffee shops too! botanic gardens belfast are a great place to spend the afternoon, if the weather holds up; further out there is lady dixon park, cairnburn park and of course stormont (see my travellog) all in the east of the city. park-walking is a popular pastime for dog owners; and you will always meet someone you know. my far the most spectacular is stormont with its mile long drive sweeping up to parliament buildings, carson statue, woodland walks, fabulous old trees and a great view form the top of east belfast and dundonald.
