TIPPING IN RESTAURANTS

by DAO

We don’t tip in Britain. Get over it. There is a reason there is no place to leave a ‘gratuity’ on credit card bills or your server tells you not to bother. In the UK service workers are paid full wages unlike restaurant waiters in North America. I should know; I was a waiter! Tipping can be severely counterproductive here. Also, if you do tip, especially by card, the tip is kept by the owners! The staff will never see that. There are also a lot of establishments that put a 10-15% ‘Service’ charge on already. So you could end up ‘tipping’ the owners twice! Do not do it. If you really feel the need, slip 5-10% in cash DISCRETELY to the server. By the way, don’t expect good or fast service. Welcome to queuing.

travel light!

The one singluar reason why i was unable to spend time in the city, was that there were no lockers available anywhere in town, to dump my big bag!!The many years of political unrest have meant that measures like this are implemented. I was hoping to drop my bags off at a locker at the railway station, and head off on my bycicle into town, but that was not to be, and i had to get myself onto the next available train bound for Dublin...

Hi, Far from the July marching season by the pro-British element in this part of Ireland being seen by some as a colourful carnival atmosphere festival thing, it is to any right thinking person the equivelant to the KKK in the USA and tourists should not support such events as they are mind pollutants and can be physically dangerous if you are a non-protestant and non-white from whatever country you hail from. Phil Try the Glens of Antrim. Lovely towns like Waterfoot Cushendall Cushendun are a safe treat.

There aren't really any! Its quite basic

Any tourist attractions in Northern Ireland in general are of a good standard. The reason is that only the very best are advertised or known about. So anything you see in a brochure or guide will be good. Its not like America where I spent 3 months 2 years running. Every house or bush or tree or sweet rapper has a gift shop and tours every 15 minutes. Its not like that in Belfast or the country as a whole.Get a car or train and head off and explore both the city and the countryside.

It may be unfair to classify The Bushmills Distillery as a tourist trap! However, the only real interest most would have in it is if the wanted 'free' Whiskey! Our driver tried to discourage the whole event, but there were enough college guys willing to venture in and majority ruled! It is a very historic building and very clean...but I would have been happy with the causeway and the castle alone!

most of the world know about the political problems in northern Ireland.from a tourist point of view people are nice and friendly.I have now been to belfast twice and have been lucky not to see any thing bad .for the most part belofast is great but its best not express opions on things you don't really know about.lucky for me this pic was taken by the police for a tourist photo not because I was a bad aussie lol.
