If you miss the train and bus from Peterborough or Leischester (as we did), you will either have to get a hotel, or a taxi.
The Taxi drivers in London are superb....the taxi drivers out of Peterborough are horrid! Our driver charged us, what we later found out to be, over $20 too much. In addition, he couldn't read and on two occassions we had to make him stop and turn around because he had missed the appropriate turn-off. So we ended up paying $80 when it was all said and done.
We had to hire another taxi on the morning of our departure, and had a very pleasant experience though... he was out of Oakham, and not only was there ahead of schedule (6am) but charged us next to nothing, dropped us off at our exact platform, and was very friendly.

You can get to the Oakham Station from Leichster or Peterborough most commonly. There are not a lot of other connections, and fewer times.
The trains run on the hour to and from both of those places though.

Good size village in the Midlands.
Great town in the midlands with a tiny castle- more like a manor house-fantastic farm museum, pretty cathedral, good pubs, and plenty of essential services.
