The Farne Islands

by margaretvn

these are a group of small islands off the coast of Northumberland - three miles out from the little fishing village of Seahouses. From Seahouses several companies run day or half day trips, some are just out and around the islands without landing and some give you 2 hours on the island/islands. We chose to do a whole day trip with Billy Shiels Tours, you really have to phone and book in advance. I phoned and there were very friendly advising me to wait a few days because of poor weather. The day we did go the weather was marvellous and the sea not to choppy. The whole day trip costs 25 pounds per person and to land on each island (Inner Farne and Staple Island you have to pay 5.80 National Trust entrance (or be a member of the NT) - sounds like a lot of money but it is ABSOLUTELY worth every penny! The boat takes you out around the islands showing the grey seals as well and the...

MartinMere Waterfowl Wetlands Trust

by tvor

The Waterfowl Wetlands Trust has several sanctuaries around the country and there's a wetlands preserve about an hour drive away from Manchester up in Lancashire at Martin Mere. The WWT is a park and a wild wetland area. There are many, many kinds of rare birds from all over the world that are raised here. Their wings are clipped so they can't fly away and they are bred specifically to preserve the species. The wetlands/marsh side also attracts many kinds of wild birds at various times of the year. There are "hides" or little huts along the edges of the mere where you can sit and birdwatch. This is the kind of thing the keener enthusiast like to do whereas casual birdie type people like us prefer the park side.Walked around the park with a bag of grain to feed the birds here and there. The Hawaiian geese will eat right out of your hand! The birds are all quite happy to see you with food!...

Graves of Britten and Pears

by margaretvn

The graves of the composer Benjamin Britten the tenor Peter Pears can be found in the graveyard of St. Peter and St. Paul's Church in Aldeburgh. Britten was born in Lowestoft in November 1913. He met his life partner the tenor peter pears in 1937. In fact Pears was Britten’s musical collaborator and inspiration as well as his life partner. Britten and Pears moved to the States in 1939 and returned in 1942. His opera “Peter Grimes” had its premiere at Sadlers Wells in 1945 and was his greatest success until then. Britten though encountered opposition from some areas of the English musical establishment and he gradually withdrew from the London scene. He formed the English Opera Group in 1947 and the Aldeburgh Festival the next year. The greatest success of Britten's career was the War Requiem which was written for the 1962 consecration of the newly reconstructed Coventry cathedral....

Canals - Enter a Magical Kingdom!

by Wowmoment

In the later part of the 18th century there was a demand for the movement of bulk goods such as coal, cheaply and fragile items such as pottery, safely. For a period of fifty or so years a network of canals was built across England particularly in the Midlands. The canals network included many locks, bridges and tunnels and was one of the great British feats of engineering. The engineers who supervised the construction have names famous in Britain such as Telford and Brindley. They were supported by an army of ‘Navigators’ (Navvies) who did all the hard labour. After the advent of the railways, competition led to the demise of the network and many parts of it fell into dis-repair. Today however there has been a lot of restoration which allows the canals to be used for leisure. It is possible to rent a Narrow Boat for a day or a week here are just two of many...

My favourite area.

by colin_bramso

Popular but not on the crowded tourist route, the New Forest in Hampshire on the central south coast is an amazing place. Open countryside with ponies, cattle, deer, even pigs, roaming freely. Ancient forests and open heathland, pretty villages plus the coastline. Lymington is well worth a visit, an international yacht centre with a bustling marina, good shops and restaurants, a market on Saturdays. The city of Winchester is worth exploring, particularly The Great Hall, 13th century hall where King Arthur's Round Table has hung for over 600 years. (I've added a Travelogue about this fabulous destination).

Great Glen Way

by nab82ba

The Great Glen Way is the ideal way to experience some of Scotland’s magnificent scenery. It is 72 miles in total and usually walked over a five day period, along the way you pass through some beautiful small towns and have the chance to visit fantastic sites such as Loch Ness, Ben Nevis and Urquhart Castle. You can walk or cycle the route and it is well signposted along the way.

The Canterbury Tales

by margaretvn

I am putting this tip here although Canterbury is certainly not "off the beaten path" but this museum is fun although not a "must see". Geoffrey Chaucer (1342-1400) was a wonderful write who gave/gives his readers real characters. He certainly made his characters real in his fantastic work - The Canterbury Tales. This is an unfinshed series of 24 vivid, raunchy stories with adultery, crime and romance as told by a group of pilgrims travelling from London to Canterbury and back. In the stories it is not CHaucer telling the story but the pilgrim. The museum "The Canterbury Tales" these people with all their rudness, smutty, and lesser characteristics are brought to life. The scnes of the book are brought to life with the sounds and smells of the time. Although the scenes sometimes have models that move jerkily the whole museum does give you an good introduction to the much more fantastic...

Jamaica Inn

by margaretvn

Jamaica Inn was built in 1750 and was a coaching inn. For travellers between Launceston and Bodmin it was a welcome stop on their journey across the wild and dangerous moor. There is also the legend that the inn got its name because of its links with the smuggling trade that was widespread in the area. Jamaica Inn could have been named because of the rum that was smuggled away through the inn. The inn is remote and isolated so it would have been a good place to hide contraband away until it could safely be moved on. It is said that about half of the brandy and a quarter of all the tea that was smuggled into England came into the country along the coast of Cornwall and Devon. The inn has a smugglers museum, which shows the history of this part of the areas past. Smugglers was relatively simple as there were limited numbers of men to enforce the law and even if the smuggler was caught the...

Wilton

by Sjalen

The village of Wilton just outside Salisbury is a very overlooked place amongst international tourists, despite lending its name to the entire Wiltshire. A shame since the Earl of Pembroke's magnificent Wilton House, used in several films, is well worth seeing for a lot of other reasons explained further in my Wilton page, but notably a Palladian bridge and connections to WWII. The village also has an Italianate church which takes you straight back to Veneto, as well as a shopping outlet attached to the famous Wilton carpet factory and is a great day out!
