Knaresborough

by Sjalen

A little known town between York and Harrogate, Knaresborough is a lovely place to spend an afternoon, wandering around the castle ruins where Thomas a' Beckett's murderers hid, or renting a boat on the river Nidd, watching trains pass on the bridge spanning the gorge high above you.

Tip Photo
Ayr

by Sjalen

Yes, there are tourists here, they come to see Robert Burns' birthplace in the pretty village of Alloway just outside. But there are still sooo many people missing Ayr in favour of more dramatic Scottish locations. Their loss as not only do they miss out on the impressive Kennedy clan Culzean Castle and lovely seaside views, but also on the fun of Rabbie's Bar! :)))

Tip Photo
Beverley

by Sjalen

This must be one of the most overlooked little gems in all England! Those who stumble upon it are probably on their way between the ferries in Hull and historic York - lucky them. Beverley is a small town with a surprisingly big Minster (built by stones from a ruined York monastery) and lots of other nice buildings to see. There is also an Air Museum and a racecourse to help you spend time here. The latter is in the countryside on the way to York and has cows wandering around in the road outside!

Wonderful historic street.

by colin_bramso

This is a place that's often used in tv commercials & movies and on calendars - such a fabulous old street, full of history. It's Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset. Have a look if you're in that area. I took the photo from a coffee shop right at the top of the hill, a nice place to stop.

the Historical Quay

by margaretvn

Visit the Historical Quay in Hartlepool. This is a really good recreation of an 18th century seaport, with its shops and naval outfitters, stalls and seamen. You are taken back to the time of Nelson. There is an audio-visual about the press-gang, and one about a naval sea battle where you experience with the ships surgeon.Visit the Trincomalee at the Historic Quay in Hartlepool. The Trincomalee is the last of Nelson's frigates. This sailing frigate was built of teak in 1817 in India. She sailed the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. She is the oldest ship alfoat in the U.K. The ship has been restored but over 60% is still original,She was actually based at Hartlepool from 1862 - 1877.Open 7 days a week from 10.00 to 17.00at:Jackson DockMaritime aveHartlepooltel: 01429 860006.

The glens of Scotland

by margaretvn

See some of the wonderful views along the glens in Scotland - this one is along Glen Sheil. I think my favourite glen though is Glencoe, there are fantastic walking opportunities and I remember watching wild deer in the glen one lovely autumn evening - it was magical. One of my favourite glens though is Glen Torridon. This glen is wonderful with great walking opportunities. The Torridonian sandstone is about 750 million years old. There is a National Trust of Scotland Countryside Centre at the junction of the A897 and the Diabaig road which has an audio-visual presentation about the scenery and wildlife of the area.to find it follow the A896 - 9 miles SW of Kinlochewe

Tip Photo
Shrewsbury

by margaretvn

it is the historical capital of Shropshire and is almost encircled by a horseshoe bend in the river Severn. This meant that the site lent itself naturally to fortification. The town's strategic significance is suggested by the names of the old two oldest river crossings: Welsh Bridge in the west and English Bridge in the east. Charles Darwin was born here at The Mount in 1809. His father was a doctor in the town. The house is on the A458. Darwin was baptised in St Chad's church. When he was 9 years old he was sent to 'Dr Butler's great school in Shrewsbury' as a boarder. The school had been founded in 1552. and today it is the library, there is a bronze statue of its most famous scholar outside it. In Darwin's time the school was very primitive indeed - with 20-30 boys sharing a dormitory ,damp beds and poor food. His brother was very interested in Chemistry and Darwin was allowed to...

the Treshnish Islands

by margaretvn

This small group of islands are situated about 5 kilometres from the nearest point on the Isle of Mull. The main islands are Lunga, Fladda, Bac Mar (also known as Dutchman's Cap) Cairn na Burgh More and Cairn na Burgh Beg but there are also numerous tiny islands in the group. They are all now uninhabited and a nature sanctuary for many seabirds and grey seals. In spring the island of Lunga is a nesting place for thousands. You can see guillemot, kittiwake, razorbill and, my favourite little character the puffin. Late autumn you can see the grey seal around the smaller islands, it is then their breeding season. The two Cairn na Burg islands have in the past often been fortified and they have ruins which date back to before the Vikings. On the boat trip back to Mull from Staffa you often see seals on the Treshnish Islands and although you cannot go on land you do get photos chances. If you...

The isle of Mull

by margaretvn

Go from Oban to The isle of Mull and Iona, and then take the ferry to Staffa and visit Fingal's Cave. A beautiful island with a lot of history. This is the island where, in 563, St.Columba began his mission in Scotland. The abbey ruins are lovely and the island is very pleasant for walking. This is one of Scotland's most historic and sacred sites. This is the harbour on Mull. This small island is lovely to wander around and there are several nice places to eat. The views over the sea are wonderful. The Isle of Mull and the ferry to Staffa and Fingal's Cave. The sea is often rough but the trip is worthwhile. The times of the trips vary but tey are advertised at the harbour. Take warm waterproof clothing.

Tip Photo
Jarlshof

by margaretvn

This is a truly extraordinary place and walking around it takes you back 4000 years. The various walks take you from the early 17th century AD laird's house through Medieval and Viking times to the prehistory. That really shows that the first dwellers in 2400 BC had the ability to choose a good site, otherwise later generations would never have gone on building on the site. Jarlshof lies on the southern tip of Shetland beside a shallow bay known as the West Voe of Sumburgh and on the lower slope of the sandstone promontory of Sumburgh Head. This was an ideal place for sheltered fishing, a good place for boats and it was fertile well-drained land with fresh water springs. A added bonus was the beach which provided good quality building stone for the settlement. It was Sir Walter Scott who gave the laird's house the name Jarlshof. The house was built on top of an artifical mound, the...
