Aber Falls

by sandysmith

Aber Falls in North Wales - its only a short walk to these beautiful falls, perhaps the lovliest in Snowdonia. The falls are some 8 kilometres along the A55 from Bangor. The waterfall descends from a height of 70 metres of which the last 40 metres is sheer overhang drop. A visit here could easily be combinned with a visit to earby Conwy - a lovely day's trip combination.

Wharram Percy

by margaretvn

Wharram Percy is a deserted medieval village on the edge of the chalk wolds in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The site is about one mile south of Wharram le Street and it is clearly sign-posted from the B1248 (the Beverley to Malton road). The site dates from the 10th century. We found it by chance as we were deviated because of roadworks. Wharram Percy is perhaps the best known deserted medieval village in the whole of England although there are in fact thousands of them in the country, and many are much better preserved. Wharram Percy became famous because it was researched each summer and in 2002 English Heritage's Landscape Investigation Team started a detailed investigation of the little that can be seen of the once thriving village – the church is ruined and the foundations are overgrown. You have to park in a little carpark and then walk about two miles along a narrow country path...

the Isle of Harris.

by margaretvn

It was May and we had this tropical beach to ourselves. You really need to take time to just sit and watch the movement of the sea and the shadows of clouds ahead - it is a wonderful magical place.Somehow we never expected to see sand and sea like this. There are no restaurants, seaside cafes or ice cream shops there just the sea, sand and the wind and sun - wonderful.

Rievaulx Abbey

by margaretvn

The almost majestic wonderful ruins of this beautiful abbey lie in the steep woody valley of the river Rye. The abbey was founded in 1132 by the French Cistercian order from Clairvaulx. It was their first major monastery in Britain and it lay almost completely surrounded by steep riverbanks, which formed a natural barrier to the outside world. The enormous Cistercian house, which numbered about 150 monks and 500 lay brethren at one time, was the nucleus from which other northern abbeys were colonised. The Cistercian religion rarely broke with convention when building and used a east-west axis for their buildings. At Rievaulx Abbey the church had to be built on a north-south axis because of the deeply sloping ground levels. The model for the first church, which was built about 1135 to 1145, was probably based on the mother church in Clairvaulx; it reflected the functional austerity of the...

The World of Beatrix...

by margaretvn

The World of Beatrix Potter. This is a world of countryside sights and sounds inhabited by Beatrix Potter's characters. It is a light and sound show where the figures are brought to life in three dimensions. Also includes a tearoom and shop. Recently the "World of Beatrix Potter" has been refurbished and improved. All the attractions are now translated into Japanese, French, Dutch and Chinese. Old Friends such as Jemina Puddle-Duck and Jeremy are in new settings. There are also new highlights such as Mr McGregor's Greenhouse where you can creep into the greenhouse of scary Mr McGregor and look for your favourite characters between the plant pots and seed trays. I do not think there is anyone who does not love Beatrix Potter's wonderful characters. At The Old Laundry,Crag RowBowness - on - WindermereCumbriaTel: (05394) 88444

Walking in the countryside

by lou31

One passtime that I enjoyed was walking through the countryside. In Britain the 'right to roam' law allows people the freedom to walk cross country without trespassing. Some areas cannot be accessed but it was a novelty for me to traipse across cow paddocks and sheep fields at will. You must of course respect farmers property and livestock and those lovely little stiles over the fences were fun to use. This passtime is free, healthy and a great way to get some good photos. Some public walks were sign posted with little arrows etc and I constantly found well used and well constructed little pathways for the public. It was like going on a little adventure and these paths took you to, through and accross some lovely countryside.

Historic stone circles.

by colin_bramso

Stonehenge is the most famous of the man-made ancient rock structures, but if you are interested in them there are others in various parts of the country to see. This one is Avebury in Wiltshire, which is actually the largest circle of them all.

The Shetland museum

by margaretvn

The Shetland museum in Lerwick is also worth a visit. It tells the story of the local people who are dependant on the sea. It is not a large museum but very worth visiting.Found at The Hillhead in the centre of the town of Lerwick and easy to find. and open monday to Saturday.

Mousa Broch

by margaretvn

Mousa Broch is one of Scotlands greatest treasures. It is an iron age tower and is very well preserved. It can be reached by fishing boat from Sandwick, there are regular trips which can be booked at the tourist office in Lerwick on Shetland. If you happen to be lucky and it is pouring with raining during your trip out on the little boat you will be given charming "up to date" yellow oilskins to wear.
