    Getting my port wrapped
    by lou31
After you have packed all that stuff, in this day and age it is wise to get your port wrapped up. I had mine done at Brisbane International Airport quite easily. Cost is $8 and it is done just inside one of the front doors. Only took a few minutes and gave me peace of mind.

Good comfortable shoes. A pair of joggers and a pair of boots for dressier times. I also bought a cheap pair of "flip flops" for walking around the hotel room etc. The airlines also give you socks on the plane and I found them quite useful later on.

Codral cold tablets...just in case. My doctor gave me some antibiotics as I am prone to tonsilitis. Saved me worrying about trying to find a doctor if needed.

Battery chargers for digital camera and mobile phone. I also took along a USB cable for my camera. If you know someone with a computer they can download your pics for you onto a cd.

Spare eye glasses if needed. Photos of family / home etc. You'd be surprised how people you meet like to see that sort of thing.

    Your bagpack should be waterresistant.

DO NOT i repeat DO NOT forget clothes against Rain ! I really mean something like Gore Tex. Because when it is raining in Scotland, IT IS RAINING !!! You feel like dressed in a shower.

Nothing special required, only something against colds.

    As usual, everything available.

A good tent is absolutely needed, and check it's waterproofness before you hike.

  • Something to wear when it's raining! Because it does - it's a fact of life here in Scotland - but the scenery is just as amazing whether it's raining or sunny!
Watch out for all 4 seasons in one day - a typical occurence in Scotland - just recently we had 10cm of snow at 930am, no snow by lunch time - it had been washed away by all the rain, thunder, a hail storm and sun by the afternoon!

If you are going up north during the summer try to have long sleeves and long trousers to wear - particularly at dusk when the dreaded midges come out! These are very small flies that fly around in huge packs and give you lots of itchy red dots!

    Suitcase/ waterproof backpack/sportsbag

Yes do take that warm sweater, that raincoat, wintercoat and those boots with you!

Waterproof camerabag! Films you can get everywhere

England is cold. Swimming is only possible in pools in july when its warm. The beaches are a bit rough (sea can be dangerous, the streaming is often strong, especially for kids)

  • I bought myself one of those money bags that you strap to your body and it was a good investment. I only used it for my passport, credit cards and larger amounts of money. It really makes you feel alot more secure knowing exactly where these important items are and there is no chance of you losing them or having them taken off you. Most other travellers I met had them also.

  • Small enough to pick up and carry yourself.
Big enough to carry the warm coat you wore to a hot place!
And big enough to hold any souvenirs, see 'Clothing' tip which will create space!

Take all your oldest things, wear them and chuck them. I even save old underwear for this purpose, and tee shirts.

When all the old stuff is gone wash and re-wear. Take some liquid detergent and wash smalls etc. After rinsing lie them on an hotel towel, roll up the towel and twist it hard. Most of the water will come out and you can leave to dry in an appropriate place.

In the British Isles always be prepared for rain and take plastics bags so you can move on with wet stuff.

    A universal bath plug. Essential.

Always , always have a photocopy passport. Preferably copy credit/debit cards as well and keep very safe, away from originals.

A door wedge on the inside will keep you secure if you are doubtful about your lock. Sleep tight!

Electric and power holes are special in wonderland, it is almost 2 holes all over the world, (or better to say in the biggest part of its countries) but not in England, they like to be special even here, so some new really new electronic stuffs has the 2 wiers for the apparat! but if not and you need to recharge your mobile so better ask or buy an adapter for it! best is to pack it with you to avoid the hesitation!

You'd better change the money to £ in your country than making it in London, in England you will lose the good price of the changing, I did it and changed the $ and Euro's to £ in France before I come to UK!
    please remember that too!

The whole world call the Subway transport : Metro, but not in wonderland, in London you have to ask for the Tube!
well the name comes from the form of the tunnel which is like a tube!
anyway it still funny and special to me, you have to pick a map, tube map with you before you go there, and there are plenty of places, like in every section of information bereau in railwaystation like the one in Victoria Station, and they are for free ;-D
