Bringing CASH into the UK

by darkjedi

You do not need to declare cash if you are travelling to or from another EU country. From 15 June 2007, if you are travelling to or from a country outside the European Union, you will need to declare any sums of cash of 10,000 Euro or more (or the equivalent in another currency) to HM Revenue & Customs. The term ‘cash’ covers:currency notes and coins bankers’ drafts cheques of any kind, including travellers’ cheques.Customs officers will not detain your cash if they have no reason to doubt its legitimacy and, where appropriate, the cash has been properly declared. However, as with cash found by Customs or police officers at any place within the UK, if it amounts to £1000 or more (or the equivalent in other currencies), it may be seized if the officer has reasonable grounds to suspect that it is either the proceeds of, or is intended for use in, unlawful conduct.Without a court order,...

My Top What to Take Tips

by Wowmoment

Small enough to pick up and carry yourself.Big enough to carry the warm coat you wore to a hot place! And big enough to hold any souvenirs, see 'Clothing' tip which will create space! Take all your oldest things, wear them and chuck them. I even save old underwear for this purpose, and tee shirts. When all the old stuff is gone wash and re-wear. Take some liquid detergent and wash smalls etc. After rinsing lie them on an hotel towel, roll up the towel and twist it hard. Most of the water will come out and you can leave to dry in an appropriate place. In the British Isles always be prepared for rain and take plastics bags so you can move on with wet stuff. A universal bath plug. Essential. Always , always have a photocopy passport. Preferably copy credit/debit cards as well and keep very safe, away from originals.A door wedge on the inside will keep you secure if you are doubtful about...

guides

by davecallahan

It is necessary to immerse yourself in some of the lore and history of England and Scotland before you go to the UK if you expect to really get full enjoment from your visit. One of the better guide books which includes info about the present and the past of the major parts of UK is the Gazetteer by Andrew Hayes. You would do well to get a copy and enjoy it on the flight over.

PACK FOR RAIN!

by ChartIt

no more then 2 bags, try to PACK LIGHT You should always have good walking shoes, and a good rain coat or poncho. YOu will need them. Depending on where you are and the time of year the weather varies grealty. in the summer a tshirt and jeans will be fine most of the time. the further north you go a sweatshirt might be nessesary digital with memory Hiking shoes if you are going.

Just in case...

by illumina

The weather isn't always bad in Britain, but it's probably wise to expect rain at some point, and bring waterproof coats and an umbrella just in case. Likewise, even in summer it can get a bit chilly (especially for those from warmer climes), so a jumper (sweater) or two wouldn't go amiss. If you are planning to get out into the countryside, I would recommend some sturdy walking boots/shoes. If you want to visit any of the smaller prehistoric sites scattered throughout the countryside, I would suggest getting hold of some decent maps, as they are not always well signposted (as we found to our cost in Cornwall!).

Clothes

by Tom_Fields

Bring a light jacket, and keep it with you. The weather can be nice, then nasty, then nice again, all in a few hours. In winter, wear a thick wool sweater beneath it. You don't need a big, heavy winter coat.

Film

Get your port wrapped

by lou31

After you have packed all that stuff, in this day and age it is wise to get your port wrapped up. I had mine done at Brisbane International Airport quite easily. Cost is $8 and it is done just inside one of the front doors. Only took a few minutes and gave me peace of mind. Good comfortable shoes. A pair of joggers and a pair of boots for dressier times. I also bought a cheap pair of "flip flops" for walking around the hotel room etc. The airlines also give you socks on the plane and I found them quite useful later on. Codral cold tablets...just in case. My doctor gave me some antibiotics as I am prone to tonsilitis. Saved me worrying about trying to find a doctor if needed. Battery chargers for digital camera and mobile phone. I also took along a USB cable for my camera. If you know someone with a computer they can download your pics for you onto a cd. Spare eye glasses if needed....

Money belt.

by lou31

I bought myself one of those money bags that you strap to your body and it was a good investment. I only used it for my passport, credit cards and larger amounts of money. It really makes you feel alot more secure knowing exactly where these important items are and there is no chance of you losing them or having them taken off you. Most other travellers I met had them also.

Pills

by dr.firas

Actually you won't need any of them, but I always keep my bag full of Asperin as you'll never know when headache attack!better to have with you than wasting your time and searching in Pharmacies for the magical Pills LOL
