Money matters

by jayhawk2000

Get a money belt which is a pouch on a string you tuck down your pants or under your shirt. Put your cash, cards, passport and tickets into plastic bags to keep them dry and put into your pouch. You may feel like a smuggler, but everything will be secure. Bring a small amount of cash in 5 or 10-pound notes. Buy a coffee or newspaper and use the change to get a luggage trolley, make calls or pay your fare into town. Bring your bank card. If your bank card is linked into a network like Cirrus (look at the symbols on the back), you can use it at ATMs in the UK. Match the symbol to the ones on the machine. You get the best exchange rate but your bank may levy a fee for using a foreign ATM plus charge for converting the currency. Ask at your bank. Tell them you are travelling in case they get suspicious of the transactions.Bring a credit card. VISA is accepted at hotels, restaurants and...

If you're coming from the US, film is much more expensive in the UK than USA. I'm a disposable camera type so I buy enough cameras (pre-VT, usually 1) to bring with me. I'm not a huge believer in travel size toiletries, I just buy the local stuff when I get there. And because of that habit, I found my all-time favorite shampoo in the UK, Timotei. Of course, now I love the stuff and can't get in the USA so I stock up during every trip. I would only suggest bringing items that you truly don't want to substitute-anything else can be purchased there and makes the trip a bit more interesting. Also, don't stress about a cell phone. British Telecom sells phone cards in many denominations that makes calling home very easy and inexpensive.

Be prepared for unexpected weather

by J.I.M

As said in my Warnings and Dangers section, Britain has very unpredictable weather throughout the year, so I suggest you bring umbrellas and raincoats even if you're coming during a supposedly "warm" season.

A wheeled bag is usually the best unless you're backpacking, the distances you have to carry your luggage at some of the train stations and airports can be quite far. Bring your umbrella and a waterproof jacket. You will need it at some point in your trip. I was poured on in Cornwall, drizzled on in London and Bath, and gently showered on in Cardiff. A small foldable umbrella is the best. Mine fits in my purse. Remember to take a voltage adapter that has the different plugs with it. The electrical plugs are different than ones in North America. Plus you might have to get used to turning on the outlet, I kept forgetting to do that and wondered why the kettle wasn't boiling!

Raincoats and umbrellas

Travel light. Do your best to just go with 2 Carry On's. Avoid hauling large bits of luggage around unless you plan on being in one place for extended periods of time. Bring good walking shoes as there are quite a few attractions/historical sights that you will undoubtedly wish to explore. Unless you are hiking through the country side or camping out in remote regions, any modern convenience will be readily available. Make sure that you bring a good camera. If you are on vacation/holiday, buy a good quality camera if you don't already have one. Disposables are fine for a birthday party, but you will be wanting to take ROLLS of pictures, not just a quick snapshot here or there. Make sure you always have extra film on hand, but you don't need to carry 20 rolls with you if you are in close proximity to a city. Umbrellas and Raincoats are a must in the Emerald Isles. (It's all the rain...

Depending wether you are going into the cities or going into the hills & mountains, the cities would just be normal luggage but if you were going into the hills & mountains ie Snowdonia, Ben Nevis & the Lake District you would need a backpack. The weather in the U.K.is very unpredictable rain is a way of life so wet weather gear no matter where you go,but if you go orienteering make sure you have plenty of warm weather gear & hiking boots the temperature in the hills & mountains can drop very quickly even in summer to below freezing once you go above a certain altitude. Anything can be bought all over the U.K. make sure you have 240volt equipment and a three pin plug but these can be bought locally very cheaply. see clothing & footwear

Something to wear when it's raining! Because it does - it's a fact of life here in Scotland - but the scenery is just as amazing whether it's raining or sunny!Watch out for all 4 seasons in one day - a typical occurence in Scotland - just recently we had 10cm of snow at 930am, no snow by lunch time - it had been washed away by all the rain, thunder, a hail storm and sun by the afternoon! If you are going up north during the summer try to have long sleeves and long trousers to wear - particularly at dusk when the dreaded midges come out! These are very small flies that fly around in huge packs and give you lots of itchy red dots!

Family Travel If you are planning on a relatively long visit to the UK and/or you know you will be visiting a lot of historical and natural heritage type attractions, an investment in National Trust membership is advisable. Not only does this give you free entry into a huge number of places, but in many you will get free parking. Some countries have reciprocal agreements between National Trust and their own equivalent. Check it out - it's worth the cost of membership!

Fantastic shopping in London during the Sale season. Clothes, shoes, etc etc Toiletries can be bought here. For special offers, go to Boots and have a look. Sleeveless for the summer, but be prepared for the unpredictable wet and cold summer too. Can feel hot during the day, but cold at night. Nothing special to bring unless you are on long term medication. In that case, do not forget your medication. A visit to the doctor can be very expensive.

Your bagpack should be waterresistant. DO NOT i repeat DO NOT forget clothes against Rain ! I really mean something like Gore Tex. Because when it is raining in Scotland, IT IS RAINING !!! You feel like dressed in a shower. Nothing special required, only something against colds. As usual, everything available. A good tent is absolutely needed, and check it's waterproofness before you hike.
