The harbour still sevices a few fishing boats, but now caters more for the growing leisure craft market.
It was first built in the early 1700's and has been replaced and added to frequently over the years since.

The Inn dates back over 200 years and is still very much in use as a modern day pub with all the facilities.
A few years ago the colour was transformed from flaky white to a vivid blue

The red Phone Box seen in Local Hero was a movie prop put up because the actual phone box was not in a good position for the cinematography. It's location was in someone's drying area near the harbour. However, many people make the journey to Pennan to have their photographs taken next to the actual phone box in the village. This is approx 20 yards away opposite a small, blue, badly worn, plaque commemorating the making of Local Hero.

A telephone booth figures prominently in the film -- there actually wasn't one in this location in Pennan -- but there is now!

Be sure to stick your head into the bar in the Pennan Inn -- this [and the telephone booth] figured prominently in the film "Local Hero", which was filmed here.

You can't miss the Inn -- it's bright blue! The locals aren't happy about this new color at all - it was always white.

Crab's Toes B & B: THE place to stay in Pennan

The narrow, winding street down the cliff to Pennan means that the big tour buses can't get there -- so either a minivan or car is the way to get here.

Pennan's location has saved it from complete tourist innundation, but also limited the economy.

Pennan may seem familiar to you beacuse the 1983 film Local Hero was shot here. Not the beach scenes though which were filmed elsewhere in Scotland.
