Pontefract Things to Do
The castle was first built of timber in the late 11th century. It was then gradually rebuilt in stone. During the following centuries it became the foremost royal castle in the north of England. Often used to house famous prisoners, Richard II was imprisoned and died here.
The castle was used as a royal base during the Wars of the Roses and during the English Civil War when it was under siege three times. After 1649 it was largely demolished.
Today what remains is a Scheduled Monument and undergoing restoration. The castle grounds and the underground magazine chamber are open to visitors.Related to:

Of especial interest is our unique Double Helix Spiral Staircase, difficult to describe, but allows two separate staircases wound around one central spine.
The stair-case of All Saints’, having a single newal, has the internal access by a small doorway leading from the North wall of the recently extended Nave, while the external access is in the corner between the North Transept and the Nave, the latter being used regularly by the bell-ringers.
Both stairways lead up to the bell-ringers’chamber.Related to:

Survival in Pontefract!
You can have a good time in Pontefract ... on one condition. You have to know the schedule, to avoid that you spend the whole evening by yourself. Sounds strange ... well it is strange. There are a lot a pubs in 'Ponte'. When people go out, they 're always on the same time at the same place. (More or less ;-D)
This is nowhere noted or printed ... if you live in 'Ponte' ,u just know where to go. They change pub every half hour or so. You 'LL see the same people every time in a crowdy pub. If you stay 5 minutes too long, the place is empty. A pint each pub seems a nice average so that it stays fun for everybody. Remember, I heard somewhere that Pontefract used to be in the Guinness book of records with 'most pubs in one square mile'. So be careful. :-D
They start at 19:30 at the 'Horse Vaults' close to the bus station and market. It's every weekend , whole year long. (also a bit on Thursday ...) When the pubs close ... there is always disco 'Shadow'. Side street of the market place.
