Until Henry the Eight closed down most of the monastries, and Cromwell and the bully boys destroyed most of what was left, the Cambridgeshire area had a number of thriving monastries.
Ramsey, out in the fens remain one of my favourite places to visit, altough Waterbeach, Anglesey, Ely and Crowland (just into Linconshire)are all worth investigating.
Little remains of the aforementioned Ramsey abbey, but the gatehouse is still largely intact, and you can still get a sense of the impressive dimensions of the enterprise from the ruins that still remain Many of the stones that have 'disappeared' from the Abbey buildings have ended up only a stone's throw away as building material for the bustling little market town
