Coffee Primo: Motorway Cafe

by uglyscot

This chain of cafes can be found in some of the motorway service areas. The tables and decor are all clean and practical. They are self -service, but the counter service is good. They are great places to have a welcome break after long distance travel. We had hot chocolate/ tea and cappuccino with pastries [apple strudel, currant cake, blueberry muffin,]. The latter was the best blueberry muffin I've ever had because it was full mof juicy berries.

Jackdaw: Old Inn, Denton, Kent

by tvor

The Jackdaw used to be a pub called the Red Lion and dates back to the mid 17th century. It was also used as a location in the movie The Battle of Britain. This whole area of Kent down to Dover was used for locations for that movie. The pub has a small bar area in front and various other nooks and crannies with a larger back area is the restaurant overlooking a garden where you can also sit out in the summer. Quite a good menu including vegetarian items and the specials board changes weekly. We were here on a group tour so we were given sandwiches, scones, clotted cream and tea and even that was tasty so I expect the food from the menu is even better.

Many all over the UK: Indian Restaurants

by Wowmoment

Usually Indian restaurants are terrific. Good food and great value.Portions tend to be on the large side so order rice between two and a Chapati or Naan bread to share. Then order sharing meat & veg dishes. Its so easy to over order and waste food (money).

THE OLD ORIGINAL BAKEWELL PUDDING SHOP: IT'S NOT A TART !

by DAO

OK, OK! It’s a pudding! If you cannot get to Bakewell, let Bakewell come to you. Please read on. This is a nice little shop that also serves as a tea room and gift shop. You can select from a huge variety of cakes and puddings, not just the famous ones. They also have gourmet coffees, teas, chocolates and other goodies. Throw in a few handicrafts and you have a place worth having a peek at. They also ship famous Bakewell Puddings – worldwide. If you don’t believe me, go to the town Post Office at 5 o’clock! Their website listed below has more information, prices and availability. Bon Appétit!

YATAI: THE BEST RESTAURANT IN THE UK

by DAO

I found Scotland’s best restaurant entirely by accident. I was walking around and was invited by the fantastic smells as I walked along the street. When I went in I was greeted by the owner and head chef, John Jones. He explained that Yatai are open air food stalls in Japan where work colleagues and friends gather for food and drinks. The restaurant is small and intimate and the staff really take pride in their job. Every dish is a creation of a totally great food explosion with reasonably sized portions. The menu is large, varied and has something for everyone. Where to many trendy restaurants try the minimalist art approach; Yatai feeds you mouth watering meals. Make sure you BOOK IN ADVANCE. John did speak to me when I found his fantastic restaurant, but he was fully booked for the night! Also, if you have never tried sushi, you will forever be disappointed in other sushi restaurants...

The Apple Pie: The Apple Pie

by steventilly

The best thing about The Apple Pie is its Bath Buns. A deliciously sticky, fruity, teacake type of bun that is quite immense - one is large enough for two to share. Famous and well sought after by those who know, the shop is often sold out of them by 3pm, so make sure you get in early enough. Other bakeries in the Lake District do a version of the Bath Bun, but none compare with those of The Apple Pie.The bakery also has extensive tearooms taking up part of the front of the shop, all of upstairs and an area out the back too. And at most times it's always full! Bath Buns

The Chocolate House: Chocoholic's Delight

by steventilly

The name says it all! This establishment serves only chocolate! Cakes, gateaux, cheesecakes and even chocolate toasted sandwiches, washed down by hot or cold chocolate drinks in a variety of imaginative flavours! The old stone building is so higgledy piggledy that the plates are in danger of sliding off the tables and you're always banging your head on roof beams!Downstairs is a shop selling... chocolate!A great place to come for a treat when you're feeling a bit naughty. Chocolate, whate else?

Tip Photo
The Glasshouse: The Glasshouse

by steventilly

The name pertains partly to the fact that the building has a lot of glass and partly to the fact that it belongs to the adjacent glass blowing studio. This Italian-themed restaurant serves excellent food, though that standard comes at a price and the Glasshouse is by no means cheap. A good option is to try the "two courses" lunchtime menu, which doesn't work out too bad. Throw in the fact that they serve De Koninck beer from Antwerp and you know you're in for a treat. Parsnip & Spinach soupSweet Potato and Spinach curry with aromatic riceBolleck of De Koninck - pure nectar!!I can never manage desert here, not because I'm full but beacuse the food is sooo good, I just feel I've had enough!

The Lion Inn: Good Grub On The High Moors

by steventilly

A pub rather than a restaurant and serving 'Pub Grub' rather than 'Noveau Cuisine' - but VT really should have a section for great pubs/bars!A 16th century Inn set high on the North Yorkshire Moors (1325 feet - the highest point in the Yorkshire Moors) on the remote road from Castleton to Hutton-Le-Hole. It's extremely popular despite it's remoteness, and has a clientel made up of hikers, bikers and day-trippers, as well as those who travel up from Teesside just to visit this pub. Inside is all stone and oak, with a roaring fire in one of the rooms. Out back is a Restaurant (serving more stylish meals, though you can still choose from the Bar menu), and the bedrooms. Opposite the pub is a quite large B&B establishment too, and the pub also offers camping facilities (quite basic). Any of the vegetarian dishes (there are about 6 to choose from). Last time we had Blue Stilton Pasta Bake...

Rumours: great sandwiches

by margaretvn

This is a continental style coffee shop/ deli. The restaurant was clean and the owners were very friendly. The food and drinks were freshly made and very tasty. I had a baguette with brie, carnberry auce and grapes, it was served with salad. Koos had a toasted panini with cheese, bacon and tomato also served with salad. We both had moccha coffees which were good although for me a little too sweet. The sandwiches were freshly made and very tasty. Also important for us - we had asked for not butter on the sandwiches and there was no butter on them - so often the request for no butter is not remembered in the ktichen and Koos just cannot eat it.
