107 Dining Room, Heswall, Merseyside, UK: Dont have the steak !

by paulzabludow

Situated in a good area, parking not so easy, many restaurants in this road. The restaurant was small and noisy, two floors. You may need to book but does not seem to make much difference, they still put us just outside the kitchen when I asked for a romantic spot in the corner by the window for my partner's birthday. The menu was very limited but the starters were reasonable, sadly that is the only average thing I can say. The main courses served to three of us were virtually inedible. The meat was very tough and although the sauce was tasty the sirloin was tough and the fillet steak was tough. No waitress asked us if we enjoyed the meal during the main course but during the starters we were asked 3 times. All in all the whole episode was very disappointing and at nearly £30 per person, not particularly cheap and this was on a night when they were supposedly offering special discounts....

Bettys: The Loveliest Tea House in York

by ChartIt

The food at this resturant is rich and full of English and Swiss favorites. I am not sure if there is a bad thing on the menu! Their tea is specailly blended and they own the recipie and the tea company that makes it ensuring that they alone have Betty's Tearoom Blend which is heavenly. It has a soft light flavor but still a good deal of texture. The service itself can be kinda slow particuarlly when it is very busy. On the weekends and around lunch time there is always a queue or line to get in. it is worth the wait. Their classic Cream Tea, two scones, clotted cream, fresh strawberry preserve and a pot of the house blend.

The Turf: The most lovely Pub

by ChartIt

We enjoyed the atmosphere of the Turf more then any other in Oxford. We didnt normally eat the food but we did enjoy their fine ale festival and spent many times enjoying a pint in the secluded area in the beer garden. it is a fun little place, that does take time to find. Be on the look out!

The Golden Galleon: Fresh Fish

by margaretvn

We decided to eat fish and chips on the day we visited Aldeburgh, figured a seaside place with a fishing tradition would be a good place to do that. The weather was lovely and warm so we decided to buy our fish and chips and eat them on the beach. It was a very good decision. We went to the Golden Galleon on the main street of Aldeburgh and then cross over the srteet and there we were on the sea front. The service was good and the fish and chips freshly fried and piping hot. They were not at all greasy and very tasty. There is just nothing to beat eating them out of the paper on the beach. Later while we were exploring the place we saw a long line waiting to be served - it tailed off along the road! It showed us that the shop was very popular with the locals as well. Next door to the fish shop is a restaurabt if you do not fancy eating with your fingers or if the weather is less friendly...

Café Revive: All over the UK

by christine.j

You'll find Marks and Spencer stores all over the UK. Many of these stores have a café, called Café Revive. It's not a restaurant for a full lunch or even dinner, but a good choice for a quick rest while sightseeing or shopping. Their coffee is really good, you can have a sandwich or some biscuits and regain your strength. There are bathrooms at the cafés, free of charge.

'Pub-grub'

by CDNgirl

I love 'Pub-grub' in general, but particularly the 'Harvester' was great! Its nice to be able to sit and eat and enjoy and not feel rushed.Particularly the Harvester in Milton Keynes had a great atmosphere in that the building was old(sorry I forget the era), and had period peices throughout the pub and restaurant area. There is also one on the North Side of Sevenoaks, Kent that sealed my opinion of the 'Harvester' restaurant. Its all good!!! Salad bar at the Harvester was nice(not great by North American Standards, but we're gluttons to the excess!) And they have a lovely little icecream dessert with a waffle chip and drizzle.

General Food tip 2

by illumina

If you don't fancy the local pub's offerings, you could always try the perennial British favourite - fish 'n' chips! Admittedly, not every chippy is great, but the ones that are? Oh my!Always better to get it takeaway, wrapped in paper and covered in salt and vinegar, to eat on some park bench or by a riverside. (Just make sure you take your rubbish with you!). Most chippies offer cod as the standard fish, but they usually do have haddock as well, if you're worried about the cod stocks being depleted. If you aren't a fan of fish at all, you could always have a sausage (battered or otherwise), or pies.

General Food tip

by illumina

Not a particular recommendation, as those can be found in my other pages, but if you're after decent food for a reasonable price, you're better off looking in local pubs. Most pubs serve food these days, but I always find that the best ones are hidden away in small towns and villages. You'll be able to get a wide variety of food in pubs, from burger and chips to a full Sunday roast.

various: Pub grub

by Sjalen

Do what the Brits themselves do - lunch in a pub. Lunchtime is also often one of the occasions when children are welcome in pubs so you can eat as a family. Not all pubs serve food, but bigger ones tend to, and what is on offer is typical fare such as shepherds' pie, fish & chips, steak & kidney pie, various sausages (depending on region) and mash, and of course the famous Sunday roast with Yorkshire puddings as Sunday is a day when families often go out for a meal and they want a big one even if puddings are served on other days too. If you have room for afters, expect things like apple pie or profiteroles. All of course washed down with a pint of local beer :) Pubs taking pride in their kitchen, or just having enough resources, often serve meals in the evenings too but there is generally a break between services in the afternoon. Steak & kidney pie

Waxy O'Connor's: Irish stew served with stone-baked soda bread

by Justin_goa

Decide which area you want to eat your meal - there are lots of different levels where you can sit. Show the person at the bar your Choice tickets, say that you want the Irish stew, and explain where you want to sit (so that the meal can be brought to you when it is ready). You can buy your drinks at the same time, but you need to pay for these yourself. As it is an Irish pub, you may want to try some Guinness ...
