Most reataurants: Check out the prices before you go in!

by lou31

Eating out is very expensive in the UK. Especially for Australians. However most restaurants and pubs have a menu and price list displayed outside. Saves embarassment if you suddenly find you can't afford the food.

Costa: The best coffee!

by lou31

I found it hard getting a good cup of coffee. Until I found Costa's. They were always busy and seemed very popular. A regular Latte was about 1 pound sixty and worth every cent. Always hot and tasty. I found though all over Britain coffee shops and cafes were a bit reluctant to fill the cups up properly. Could not get a 'flat white' anywhere so just settled for a latte.

Simpson's in the Strand: The Best English Beef and Lamb

by JimTammy

I had the Prime rib of roast beef with all the trimmings. It is sliced thin at your tableside and served with vegetables, potato and bread (popover? I think its called). It was excellent. The lamb is also roasted and sliced and served tableside. Jim didn't share, he ate it all. So it must have been good!

The Bel and the Dragon. Godalming, England: How to worship food!

by hotlipz

The Bell and the Dragon is an old church that has been converted into a restaurant. This may sound a bit strange but I have taken my American colleagues there a few times now and so have had no complaints! The menu is daunting, the service is good and the food is fantastic - they also have an enormous wine cellar behind the bar (that used to be the altar!) I love the atmosphere, the surroundings, the gallery and the location - its gotta be worth a visit if you are in Guildford or Godalming. This may not be the cheapest restaurant in the area but its well worth a visit. Pan Fried Breast of Duck with Sarladise Potatoes, warm Pear and Shallot Marmalade and Madeira Jus - yum!! I particularly like the fact that you have have more vegetables with your meal - definitley a heallthy plus! Another recomendation is the Sunday roast - the beef is superb and I guarantee you wont need to eat again...

Fish & chips in Metropolitan: Fish and Chips and a pint of beer

by dr.firas

We went me my friend Mohammed *Mido* and his sister Rihab to the Metropolitan restaurant which is really great in decoration and service, and Mido was all the time repeating that I have to try the most traditional food in London : Fish and Chips (with salt and vinegar) plus a pint of beer, and I did it finally and I have to say I liked it so much, it was really great to see number one of the English public most famous food :-D

Bengal Blues: Brick Lane

by bthon

The category is more specifically Bangladeshi food, but Indian I guess is close. Anyways, Brick Lane, on the east end of london, is famous for their Bangladeshi food, and since I was living only a few blocks away, I was able to try several restaurants along this road. Though I am sure more than a couple escaped me, I found that Bengal Blues had one of the best selections in regard to the buffet at the most affordable price. Sunday is by far the best day to go down brick lane, as many of the restaurants have specials especially during lunch. I think the buffet usually ran around 7 pounds but the food was outstanding! Going on sundays also allowed me to pick up fresh fruit and vegetables at brick lane market, though watch out as some of the fruit goes bad very quickly! Chicken Korma and tikka masala by far! though the other dishes are quite good as well! Go with the buffet though and ask...
