October 1st, and the chill of autumn is setting in. The leaves are started to turn on the trees, perhaps a bit late, though reportedly this year will be outstanding for leaf colour; the right combination of rain in spring and sunny days resulting in a very high sugar concentration in the leaves. These pictures certainly won't be the most spectacular of the displays, just the harbingers. And the most spectacular colours I expect to be found to the north, in the Trossachs.
Within about ten minutes from any of the major settlements you can be on, often empty, backroads, wending through the fields and over the hills.This is a bit further afield, heading westwards to the small village of Fintry, about 15 miles drive from Stirling and 20 miles drive from Glasgow. If you come from Stirling via North Third, you will travel over some extremely back roads - a few years ago a house up there was cut off by snow for 27 days.
The 'built up' part of Central is really only the south-east corner. Whilst the northern reaches are mountainous, there is quite a bit of rolling farmland, especially along the Carse of Forth, west of Stirling to Loch Lomond. Alluvial flood plain, I think..This view is taken from Hoish Farm, about 20 miles west of Stirling, towards Gartmore and the Trossachs.
