The Crown Hotel: Plenty of Choice, Good Enough...

by nickandchris Written Nov 16, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

On a dull October day, we found ourselves in the pleasant town of Langholm, just north of the border. We decided to have a pub lunch, followed by a walk along the river Esk.

Time was marching on as we perused the menus of a couple of places so quickly opted for the Crown Hotel.

A pleasant enough bar to eat in and there's also a dining room. it was fairly quiet on our visit with plenty of empty tables so we chose a table by the window.

I remember when we ordered the drinks, a couple of beers were off but this wasn't a problem for us.

There were two menus, plus a £6 menu. The main menu offered grills and larger cooked dishes, the second menu offered baked potatoes and gaguettes and the £6 menu had a reasonable choice of meals such as liver and onions, sausage and mash, giant yorkshire pud and mince, cold ham, eggs and chips etc.

Favorite Dish: Our choice was made finally:

Two cold ham, chips and eggs which looked delicious and was, although Nick's eggs were over-cooked (from the £6 menu.
A giant Yorkshire pud filled with mince, veg and chips which was enormous and reported to being tasty (£6 menu)
I opted for a cream cheese, bacon and mango chutney baguette which turned out to be a very nice combination. This was served with a nice salad and a small pot of coleslaw. £5.95 I think.

The only moan was that the chips weren't home made and what we thought was a homemade yorkshire pud wasn't. Still, it was pretty good for ready bought.

Shame about the eggs! Nice combination Rather large and filling! The bar at the Crown.. getting the drinks in...

The Sportsman Restaurant: Over the border but food's good

by clivedinburgh Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Sportsman Restaurant is part of the March Bank Hotel which lies just yards over the border in England on what is known as Scotch Dyke (a strip of land that forms the border between the rivers Esk and Sark)

The restaurant specialises in game meats and fresh fish. A great place for a small group as there are several rooms and a cooperative staff who don't mind you laughing the night away. A good selection of wines are also available.

The bar at the front of the hotel is filled with animal prints and oils that have been produced by local artists for sale to customers.

Favorite Dish: The huge steaks are good and I'd a great Egg & Spinach starter on my last visit (28/07/07).

The driveway up to the hotel. The bar at the Marchbank Hotel (camera playing up) Thankfully, we'd the back room to oorselves!
