On a dull October day, we found ourselves in the pleasant town of Langholm, just north of the border. We decided to have a pub lunch, followed by a walk along the river Esk.Time was marching on as we perused the menus of a couple of places so quickly opted for the Crown Hotel.A pleasant enough bar to eat in and there's also a dining room. it was fairly quiet on our visit with plenty of empty tables so we chose a table by the window.I remember when we ordered the drinks, a couple of beers were off but this wasn't a problem for us.
There were two menus, plus a £6 menu. The main menu offered grills and larger cooked dishes, the second menu offered baked potatoes and gaguettes and the £6 menu had a reasonable choice of meals such as liver and onions, sausage and mash, giant yorkshire pud and mince, cold ham, eggs and chips etc.Our choice was made finally:Two cold ham, chips and eggs which...
WALKED INTO RESTAURANT, NO WELCOME AT ALL, IN FACT NO STAFF TO BE FOUND ANYWHERE UNTIL A YOUNG THIN BOY POPPED HIS HEAD AROUND THE DOOR, LOOKED UTTERLY DISINTERESTED IN ANY POTENTIAL BUSINESS.FOOD WAS OK, BUT FOR PRICE BEING CHARGED - OVER INFLATED IN MY OPINION!
NONE TO SPEAK OF
Volunteer Arms, Penpont.: Friendly Little Local.
by nickandchris
We like to try and have a pub lunch while we are on holiday in the motorhome and Penpont was the obvious choice for us, being just down the road from the site we were staying on.A blackboard outside advertised a take away service at a reasonable price and seemed a good opportunity for the landlord as there is a larger caravan site in the village, as well as the CL we were on.Our host was a likeable type and offered us a snack menu and a full menu. I really can't remember what was available but it seemed interesting enough. We laughed when our host was asked what a spotlight was for and he explained it was to shine on his glitter ball when he held themed disco nights. Well, the pub was small enough, with only two or three tables, some bar stools and a further dining room that we didn't see the size of. The dance floor was all of four feet square. Must have been cosy nights!Another couple...

Star Fish Restaurant: Great Fish and Chips
by davesut
Stopped off for tea in Stranraer and struggled to find somewhere to eat. Ended up at this place which was close to the ferry terminal. If you are waiting for the ferry take less than five minutes up the road into the town centre and this place is on the left hand side. Menu included all the regular chippy stuff as well as a few pasta dishes, pizzas and jacket spuds. Good value for money.
The River Bank: Great service
by davesut
Simple tea room that we stopped for lunch at in Newton Stewart. Staff were really helpful at this place so deserve a mention. Menu includes the sandwiches, salads and snacks that you would normally find - all well presented and prices reasonable
Harbor Lights Bistro: On the Harbor
by beez1
A lovely restaurant with a good view of the harbor. Good food with a nice welcome. It was busy the night we ate, I'd make reservations.
I had a seafood pasta and my husband enjoyed pork medallions with mustard sauce. They have the wonderful Cream of Galloway ice cream. Don't miss trying the Oatmeal, Whisky and Honey Ice Cream, this is the stuff dreams are made of.
The Auld Alliance: Wonderful Food
by beez1
This was a wonderful meal. The name indicates the old alliance between the Scots and the French. The food is a reflection of both. Local food well prepared and presented. Make reservations.
I had scallops in a pastry that was simply wonderful.
Gallie Craig Coffee House: Unusual roof
by nickandchris
This place was still being built when we visited the Mull of Galloway. It was being built with a peat roof to blend into the cliff side. Spectacular location.
As it wasn't open have no experience of eating here.
