 Edinburgh Festival Theatre

In 1892 the Empire Palace Theatre was opened on this site. "It was built by the great British theatre architect, Frank Matcham, with lavish decoration: elephants with Nubian riders, nymphs and cherubs abounded the plasterwork. The original Empire Palace Theatre sat 3000 theatregoers on four plush levels of green, cream and tobacco gold." (Quoted from the website below.)
This theatre survived a disastrous fire in 1911 and was used until 1928, when it was replaced by an even grander version. From 1928 to 1963 the Empire was a variety, musical and opera house, and was also used for ice shows. From 1963 to 1991 it was a bingo hall, but then it was completely rebuilt again, with a new all-glass front end facing Nicolson Street.
They describe the current auditorium as "a wonderful restoration of the Empire Theatre’s former 1928 glory, a dramatic mix of art nouveau, beaux arts and neo-classicism, encompassing perfect acoustics within a parlour-like intimacy." It now has a capacity of 1915 seats.
It was re-named the Edinburgh Festival Theatre when it re-opened in June 1994.

It is home to Scotland's greatest collection of European paintings and sculpture from the Renaissance to Post-Impressionism, and is one of the very finest galleries of its size in the world.
The building was designed by William Henry Playfair (1790-1857). Its foundation stone was laid in 1850 by Prince Albert, and the Gallery opened to the public in 1859.
Includes masterpieces by Jacopo Bassano, Van Dyck and Tiepolo, Gauguin's Vision after the Sermon, Velázquez's Old Woman Cooking Eggs, El Greco's Fábula, Bernini's sculpture of Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo, Botticelli's Virgin Adoring the Sleeping Christ Child and Antonio Canova's Three Graces, shared with the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
The National Gallery is a lovely place where get lost if you love painting and Arts.

At the entrance you can get a plan over the museum and in the big room called Hawthornden Court you can pick up free audio guides.
The chesspices on the photo were found on the island Lewis 1831. They were made of walrus ivory in the 12th century when the Norse ruled the Hebrides. These two museums are next door to one another, they are connected on the inside so you can walk from one to the other.
I didn't have a lot of time so I just took a brief tour of the Royal Museum, the focus of which is natural history, science & industry and decorative arts, then headed over the the Museum of Scotland, set up to take visitors on a chronological journey through Scotland, the earliest starting on the lower levels.
They announced a free museum overview tour as I was entering, turned out to be the only one on it. The guide took me to the different levels of the museum, explained how the exhibits were laid out and pointed out some of the highlights. Check in Hawthornden Court for a schedule, they also had a highlights tour that might be good if you are pressed for time like I was. The brochure also says they have free audio guides at the same spot.
Tip #1: for a great view over the city, head up to the Roof Terrace on the 7th floor of the Museum of Scotland
Tip #2: currently on Tuesday it's open until 8 pm. And like all the other museums in Edinburgh, it's free! Leave a Comment
