Edinburgh Castle by MalenaN You can easily spend several hours exploring the castle. The castle is not one building, but consist of towers and many separate buildings. Here you can visit the Scottish National War Memorial, the Great Hall (used by the Scottish Parliament until 1639), the Royal Palace (with the Honours of Scotland), Royal Apartments (were Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to James VI), the Castle Vaults (used to be a prison of war in the 18th century), the National War Museum (with a display of Scotland’s military history) and the Batteries with canons (from where you have a nice view over the city). After entering the main gate you will be able to rent an audio guide for 3 pounds. The audio guide will give you a lot of information and stories, but there are also small signposts around the castle. Entrance fee I February 2005 was 9.80 pounds. The castle is opened every day of the week. 25 March – 30 September: 9.30 - 18.00 1 October – 24 March: 9.30 – 17.00 Leave a Comment Phone: 0131 225 9846

When you are visiting Edinburgh Castle, try to be there before 1 p.m. and secure a place from which you can see the signal gun on Mills Mount Battery - the 'One O'Clock Gun'. The gun is fired every day except Sunday and adds to the attractions of the castle. It has a long tradition as the gun ( a different one then) was first fired in June 1861. If you can't go to Edinburgh, see the spectacle on the Internet at: http://www.edinburgh-tattoo.co.uk/tattoo-experience/video.html Leave a Comment Address: Edinburgh CastleDirections: Beside the Cartshed

Guards by shivan The Castle guards still do their job at the castle entrance like many centuries ago. There is a square at the entrance where many shows take place during the year. the most important is the Castle Esplanade This event is the venue of the world-famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the annual occasion on which, over a period of three weeks in August, the Army presents a lively programme of music, marching and historical re-enactments under floodlights before large and appreciative audiences Leave a Comment

If you are a history buff, do not let the admission price (currently L10.30) deter you from visiting Edinburgh Castle, for me it was the one must see place in the city. Perched on top of a volcanic hill, the Castle looks to be impenetrable and in fact was for the most part. Start your visit with the included guided tour that starts near the entrance, the 1/2 hour tour takes you up to the top of the Castle where you can start your visit of the interior. Highlights of the Castle *The Scottish crown jewels, not as impressive as the ones in the Tower of London but still interesting to see, there's a crown, sceptre and sword *the War Monument, be sure to check out the interesting stained glass windows depicting scenes with soldiers and military *Prisoners of War, an underground display on the life of prisoners, complete with soundtrack *St. Margaret's Chapel, the oldest structure in Edinburgh *Mon Megs, a medieval cannon, not to be confused with the one o'clock gun *The one o'clock gun, if you are still there at 1 pm, you can watch the gun being fired Leave a Comment

St Margaret's Chapel in Edinburgh by MalenaN St Margaret’s Chapel is the oldest building at the castle (and in Edinburgh) and it is also the building standing on the highest point of Castle Rock. The chapel was built between 1124 – 1153 in memory of Queen Margaret (St Margaret). It is a very small chapel built in Romanesque style. Just outside the chapel is the huge canon Mons Meg. edinburgh castle by TomorrowsAngel This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret’s Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after WWI. The Castle can be seen from all over the city, and is in fact the most visited tourist attraction in all of Scotland. From the ramparts there are magnificent views over the whole of Edinburgh and indeed of much of Southern Scotland. In the summer months of July and August, the Castle plays host to the world famous Military Tattoo. All the year round, every day on the stroke of 1300, the Castle gun fires a blank round to indicate the time. This is the famous '1 o'clock gun'. Watch the pedestrians along Princes Street as the gun fires - it always catches a few by surprise! The castle also houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th-century gun Mons Meg and the National War Museum of Scotland. an attempt to make a good pic by shivan This is not so good, I know, please forgive me, I was young... I put it in, anyway, to give an idea of how wonderful is the Edinburgh landscape from above. The hole I was taking the picture through was made for archers to defend the stronghold from the frequent assults brought here in the past centuries. Edinburgh was and exceptionally important strategic position for the whole United Kingdom. Leave a Comment

The Edinburgh Castle entrance by shivan Your visit to Edinburgh cannot be named complete until you pay a exhaustive visit to the Edinburgh Castle. It is the largest monument in Edinburgh, incredibly well conserved and maintained. It really seems to me to be back in the Middle Ages. Only the enormous crowd of people hanging around flashing everywhere has brought me back to the 20th century. Absolutely amazing Leave a Comment
