If time is really limited and you want to see the Highland scenery, wildlife, rugged hillsides, stone houses, farms, sheep and hairy cows - in one day out from Edinburgh - read on! Head for the Highlands of Perthshire, just north of Edinburgh. Don't waste your time, energy and petrol money driving all day to the 'big names' - you can be in this photograph just an hour / hour and half from the centre of Edinburgh. Once there take a stroll, relax, have a picnic, watch the birds and animals, and feel good. | | | | Many Miles From Edinburgh...: The River Tay, North Of Edinburgh - Beautiful | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Just north of Edinburgh is the ancient county of Perthshire, a huge county that includes rugged Highland and gentle Lowland scenery in abundance. The market town (or mini city) of Perth is just 40 minutes from Edinburgh, along the M90 motorway, and you'll really appreciate the freshness of the scenery, the clean air and open space. Perth is where scotland began, where Kings first came together and created a nation, with Scone Palace now occupying the site of Pictish & Scottish Chiefs' crowning. Well worth exploring. Perth is a beautiful, quiet, unassuming town, of 50,000 people. Now a thriving and popular place - it grew up as the best crossing point of the mighty River Tay, and a harbour for ships entering Scotland up the Tay. The Romans were preceded many centuries before by nomads in wood canoes, first settlers of this land after the ice age. Perthshire and Tayside are full of historic sites, stone circles, iron and bronze age remains, castles and is a centre for high quality malt whisky - with both the oldest and smallest distilleries in Scotland. Perth and the River Tay are best loved for the countryside, the richness and beauty of fields, lochs, woods and hills that is mind blowing. it hardly matters that the oldest living thing in all Europe is here (Fortingall Yew Tree) or Britain's tallest trees. I promise, you'll love it.Website: www.perthshire.co.uk Other Contact: www.multimap.co.uk

 | | | | Many Miles From Edinburgh...: So Close - Yet Miles Apart - Do Please See Glasgow | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Unbelievably, Glasgow is really close to Edinburgh - maybe this proximity and vying for seniority is why the two cities hardly speak a kind word of each other! And then there is football. So, you will hear little said of Glasgow's amazing architecture, museums, West End, its shops, galleries and parks, the River Clyde and its rich heritage - but it is well worth seeing - you Must See Glasgow when in Scotland, sometime, whether part of a day trip from Edinburgh, or on a proper visit. Glasgow deserves to be seen, and you deserve to explore Glasgow. It's also way closer than most other places in this category!!!! Leave a Comment Address: GlasgowDirections: West of Edinburgh, down the M8 motorway or by train. This is a major commuter route!Website: www.multimap.co.uk

 | | | | Many Miles From Edinburgh...: Doune Castle - It's FUN, Enjoy Friendly Doune! | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Doune Castle - part of a day trip to the Stirling area, or when travelling towards Glencoe and/or The Trossachs National Park. Its a fun castle - still full of lots of history and fortifications, with wonderful views like this picture - but its also a friendly, relaxed sort of attraction. After shuffling around Edinburgh, with queues and crowds, you'll be tired and need a break. Doune is perfect. enlivened by the fact Monty Python's Holy Grail Film was filmed there, years ago, so the staff are a bit more relaxed, and you get to climb freely all over the place, where in other castles it'd be roped off. Serious castle hunter or casual backpacker, this is a great stopping place - just north of Stirling. If you've done Edinburgh Castle, you may be doubting the need (and expense) of visiting Stirling Castle, and then the Wallace Monument (my relative!) - and I'd agree. Give yourself a break - you're on holiday! its great to view the castles and monument from the outside, for free, then head north for 20 minutes to Doune!! Let your hair down and enjoy yourself!!!
