If you are planning on one thing to do in Edinburgh, except of the mandatory visit to the Whisky shop, it is a visit under the old city to see Mary Kings Close. This is an really exiting and educational short-trip, that shows you how the lived in the old days of Scotland. The "new" old city is basically built upon the the oldest one, and this is what you are going to see. The guide we had, an actor student, was really entertaining and thought us a lot. Well worth the money.

Take the Tour Bus from Waverly Bridge - a quick and easy way to get around Edinburgh's Old City and get information too !!!. I am from the area and took some friends on it a few months ago and it was fabulous - very informative and they particularly liked how you can get on and off if they wanted to visit a particular attraction. Many different languages to hear the tour in, although listening to it in the native accent is perfect as my friend informed me afterwards.

City tour buses, Edinburgh by Ben-UK If you fancy a bus tour of the city then go to Waverley Bridge, next to the train station, lots of buses there -- costs about £9 and tickets are valid for a day -- you can hop on/off at the many stops around the city or the full tour takes about an hour. I had heard alot about the Edinburgh vaults from people who had been there in the past. Feelings of excitement, fear, hot and cold temperatures so i knew i had to make a trip there. It was an enjoyable experience and the story teller kept the crowd interested. A couple of laughs were at my expense when i was picked as a volunteer. Why...? I ask... why? If you're interested in going, take a look at this webiste for some good information. http://thecapitalscot.com/pastfeatures/vaultedin.html

by 36waterfalls During the 18th century the old town of Edinburgh became seriously overcrowded. Small, dark, unhygienic alleyways left no space for carts or bigger traffic. Wealthier folks moved up and the Georgian New Town developed. A bridge was built to connect the two parts of town, while underneath this South Bridge vaults were created. These started off as storage space, developed into oyster bars and shady clubs, illegal whisky breweries then sprung up and more criminal activities took place. Eventually these dark, dripping chambers became slum accomodation, crying poverty and filth. The South Bridge Vaults were cleared late 19th century and forgotten until 1994 when they opened for tours. You'll find the companies offering walks around St. Giles, but check the web as well, since in Summer booking is recommended. I took my walk with Mercat Tours (leaving on the hour at Mercat Cross). Quite a fascinating walk underground, but not as haunted and creepy as they make it sound. The guide had a thorough knowledge of the history of Edinburgh and knew how to tell a good story. It was pretty interesting to see the other side of town. To make the most of any walking tour under/overground I suggest to visit museum 'The People's Story' first. This will give you a great understanding of life in old Edinburgh. Guided Vaults Walk: GBP 8,50 (just over one hour)

There are lots of tours available which go in the various underground vaults and tunnels under Edinburgh which once housed many poor people hundreds of years ago. Some parts of the tunnels have human skeletons in the walls which are from the plague. There are lots of ghosts and poltergeists which reportedly frequent the tunnels and the popular show "Most Haunted" have filmed down in the tunnels. The best time to go is at night or on Halloween when it is really scary. We went down the vaults and my friend was sceptical but I felt dizzy as soon as I entered the vaults. We were told mobile phone memories had been wiped and one of the guides showed us a torch which apparently had been smashed to pieces on the very day. All the guides wear fancy dress and there are mysterious sounds which seem to follow the tour through the streets whereever they go. This was a really enjoyable experience,I loved it and I would like to do the tour on Halloween. We went with Auld Reekie tours, but I think there is also a company called Meercat Tours. You can find out about them at the tourist information office on Princes street. Address: The Royal Mile

a scary good time is had by all, well, by most... by morgane1692 I mention this weird and morbid tour as a nightlife tip as well, but here we go again...you may or may not see or feel any actual ghosties or spectres or wraiths on your own graveyard trek but it's a cool way to spend an evening, plus your family and friends back home will think you are mad and sick and stranger than they may already see you, so who can resist that?! Every evening several companies offer walking ghost tours for 8.50 pounds (6.50 for students) which last about an hour or so. It's not scary or riveting but you do learn some history, old wives tales - see the dark, mysterious part of Edinburgh. I went once with Mercat Tours where the guide basically told ghost stories and took us to underground vaults. http://www.mercattours.com/home.asp The second I took was with City of the Dead which supposedly has documented cases of physical attacks which are in the hundreds according to them and was on some TV show about real ghost stories so ofcourse i had to go. It was the same thing as the first but instead of underground vaults we went to a locked cemetary/prison where Mackenzie is buried. http://www.blackhart.uk.com/cod/tours.html Both guides told us they have witness attacks or strange things...something different really. 'Witch' by G. Godwin :-) by Duffelgirl On recommendation from a friend we decided to scare ourselves and go on a 'GHOST AND GORE' in Edinburgh, which goes into the ghost world and explores the bloody pastimes of our ancestors. I wanted to do this tour in particular because it explores Edinburgh's underground network of dungeons and torture chambers. Unfortunately the tour only runs from May - August (it was November) so we opted for the 'MURDER AND MYSTERY TOUR' instead. We met outside 'The Witchery Restaurant', just underneath the illuminated castle - a majestic sight in the dark, chilly November sky. We were taken around Edinburgh's old, narrow, cobbled streets and treated to tales of brutality and intrigue by a strange pasty man in a cloak (the deceased 'Adam Lyal'). This was certainly educational and fun - tales of the weird and wonderful alongside a mad monk running amok and a craggy old witch throwing buckets of cold water. Highly recommended and highly popular -MAKE SURE YOU BOOK IN ADVANCE! GHOST AND GORE TOUR runs from May - August (starts around 7pm and lasts about 1hr 30 mins). Adults - 7 pounds, Children -4 pounds. MURDER AND MYSTERY TOUR runs all year round (starts around 9pm/10pm and lasts about 1 hr 15 mins). Adults - 7 pounds, Children 4 pounds.%o* Leave a Comment
