    Edinburgh Tourist Traps

There are many walks that claim to show you 'Underground Edinburgh,' but only one shows you the part of the city that was buried many years ago: Mary King's Close. Other tours will dub themselves as "underground," but only show you vaults under a bridge (South Bridge). You will not be allowed to take any photos or videos, but they will try to...

    Edinburgh Tourist Traps

Like any capital city there are plenty of traps to allure the eager tourist. Watch out for the overpriced shortbread biscuits, tartan everything (can you find YOUR clan?) and plenty of whiskey themed gifts. I managed to go home with all three!.

  • Royal Mile

    Edinburgh Tourist Traps

Unless you want something typical Scottish to eat and pay for it don't eat at the restaurants on the Royal Mile. They are very expensive and if you never had any Scottish food before and are not sure, this is not the place to try it.

  • Scott Monument

    Edinburgh Tourist Traps

This is not the best view point for Edinburgh although its not bad. Its a hell of a dizzying climb up very narrow stairs for a few minutes of viewing not really worth in my opinion. Check out Black ford Hills for the best view. Hit the stairmaster first and make sure when you do it its a nice day. Hit Blackfort hills (see must do activities.)

  • Art & Culture

    Edinburgh Tourist Traps

This is kind of a "museum", where the visitors are told about how our planet was created and how it was developing. However, no real things of the past centuries are exhibited. "Our Dynamic Earth" is suitable for 7-10-year old kids. Smaller kids can be scared there, and for older children and for adults it will be boring. It's very informative, so...

    Edinburgh Tourist Traps

The Royal Yacht Britanna at Ocean Terminal (A shopping mall & cinema) is over priced but it does give you a chance to see how the Royals lived and the poor bloody marines who went with them. Around ?10 and it will take about 1 hour 30 mins. The Castle cost ?10 and you can spend 4 Hours or more. The view is great take a wide angle lens. Marks and...

  • Many Miles From Edinburgh...

    Edinburgh Tourist Traps

If you like the views of an oil refinery then this place is great. It's an absolute dump - the only thing that can be said about it is that the car parking is free! How the NT have got the nerve to charge to go into 1 small house is beyond a joke. There is simply nothing to see - we drove back to the Trossachs - they are plenty more pretty and...

  • Festival, Tattoo, Hogmanay, Etc.

    Edinburgh Tourist Traps

Now I suppose theatre goers and culture vultures will not agree with me but I'd advise you to avoid Edinburgh during the 'festival' period (August). It's NOT typical then... crammed full of people from far and wide, with everywhere just too busy and noisy to be enjoyable. I'd also advise you to avoid Hogmanay.... do yourself a favour and visit at a...

  • Greyfriar's

    Edinburgh Tourist Traps

The statue of a dog who stood by his master's grave for years. It's cute, I have to admit, but not worth a special trip. Although if you're on your way from the castle to the National Museum, you may as well pass it.
