Midgies are NOT too bad here!

by NiciJ

Most visitors to Scotland will know about the AWFUL midgies... In actual fact, Orkney has such a lovely constant draft that the dreaded midgies which cause discomfort elsewhere in Scottish extremes are often missing here in Orkney due to the refreshing but mild wind! Thank the lord!www.orkneycrofts.com

The Orcadian.

by leics

'The Orcadian' is the newspaper of the islands, containing all the local news, events, weather forecasts, football scores, advertisements.......and even when the mail and newspapers will arrive by plane! It will give you a real flavour of the islands, as well as up-to-date information before your visit. You can read 'The Orcadian' online at www.orcadian.co.uk .

George Mackay Brown

by leics

If you really want to know about Orkney customs, read any of George Mackay Brown's novels or collections of short stories. Best known as a poet, he spent all his life in the islands, living in Stromness until his death in 1996. His tales of Orcadian life are fascinating, his description of the landscape in all its moods absolutely wonderful. Recommended reading for anyone travelling to the Orkneys.
